I think since we finally figured out a way to get wireless working, this is for sure a possibility. Sure it'd take a while to type things, but Short IM'ing would be fun and easy.

This would be slow, but it would still be cool.

Also, there could be some default phrases that you didn't have to type out.

true it would be slow to type but think if some one can make a keyboard like the psp's and mosst of u own a cell phone how long did it take u to get use to txting it would be that same for the zune

Edit: how di they get wireless working and are the working on a game that will use it ?

The networking is pretty simple to do for something like an IM app. I'm working on two Zune game ideas right now, but perhaps I'll try to throw something together. It'll be horribly slow to type (being a DPad controlled on-screen keyboard), but it shouldn't be hard to program.

Even less so if you could use the touch instead of clicking(it would be faster and quieter -Alex- haha) or the ability to hold a direction for it to scroll quickly. And i can't remember for the life of me how typing worked with a psp, i remember i was getting pretty good at it one time i was on my friends' psp using the internet. can't remember what it was like now :/ but yeah if that could work someone could try that too yet controls can always be figured out and changed pretty easily in the long run

I would so love this. And now that we have wireless working, it's so possible.

This would be a pretty awsome idea actually regardless of how long it takes to type things the simple fact that i could do it would rock it would also be good if there was a small list of pre-made things to say like instead of typing in whats up it could be on a small list that you just click on to but the whole thing in instead of manually typing it that would help alot if the common things people type were in a small list.

The only thing im thin king is that if your close enough to message someones zune like that then arent you close enough to speak to them with your mouth? but I guess in school this would be GREAT and more discreet than cell phone texting.

You will never be able to implement an MSN/AIM/Yahoo/GTalk/anything IM system that reaches out to the internet. It won't happen. The XNA Framework does not (and likely will not) expose any plain, internet facing APIs for you to use. The best you'll get is up to 8 people on an ad-hoc network talking to each other using the XNA networking.

Except there is no "maybe". Let me just rephrase it: There will not be open internet access for XNA applications on the Zune.

8 person chatrooms sound nice.

well i've seen a good text interface in the high score table for the game match em. just copy the code from that, add some box that will have the conversation, and a main menu to do things like change text color. as far as names go, you could just have it report the zune's name that it came from.
