I think the "setting your dns to 165.132.120.124" part is missed. and after get an error mgs., the path of directory, which contains 3 bins, inside the brace may vary.

This is nice but why cant you just "downgrade" straight to 1.4 fw instead of 1.2?

I failed. when I reached step 5 and used the Patcher to patch Zune program, I got this message: Cannot update becuase Zunelib.dll is unknown version.
Then, I looked up the verson of Zunelib.dll and that was 1.0.5341.0
Please help.
Thank you,
Kenny

Hello,
I am following the instructions step by step so far but I can't get past step 5.
"5. Execute "ZunePatcher.exe" from Zune.RE.zip. Keep on clicking next until it asks for you to find the directory where your Zune program is installed, which is normally "C:\Program Files\Zune\." After, it should patch your Zune Software into thinking that your firmware needs to be updated."
I am trying to patch it using the zune patcher but it says "The program cannot update the installed version of Zune Patch because of the following reason:
C:\Program Files\Zune\zunelibb.dll: unknown version
Also the next paragraph in the guide says, "Now, we are ready to start the firmware update. First, go to the directory that was made in preparation step 6 and launch java -jar ZuneFirm.jar. You should see the following: "
Where is step 6?
Do you mean Step ......."4. Create another directory and copy "Zune01050485" firmware made in step 3, and "ZuneFirm.jar" from Zune.RE.zip into the directory. We will comeback to this step later."
If it is this, I don't know what you mean by creating another directory. I copied these two files into a new folder. And also what do you mean by "launch java - jar ZuneFirm.jar. Do you mean just clicking on ZuneFirm.jar?
I would really appreciate this since I am new to this and I am confused by these steps. Thanks!

No you open up cmd (winkey+r type in cmd) then you use the cd command to change directories into the one where the zunefirm.jar is, and enter "java -jar ZuneFirm.jar" (without the quotes)
As for the version problem, go in the "program files/zune" folder and find zunelib.dll and checkts its version number if its like 1.0 something then just try going straight to the next step. (I havent tried this yet but im guessing its just throwing the error out after it patches it for some reason.)

Thanks for getting back to me so fast. Umm. I copied and pasted the command "java -jar ZuneFirm.jar" without the quotes but it says unable to access java -jar ZuneFirm.jar.
I think the problem might be that I don't know how to create a directory. How do you create the following directory below? Thanks
4. Create another directory and copy "Zune01050485" firmware made in step 3, and "ZuneFirm.jar" from Zune.RE.zip into the directory. We will comeback to this step later.

I'm getting that same error, tried reinstalling zune software, but that didn't seem to help, any other ideas?
ZuneLib.dll version is 1.0.5341 by the way.

Me too. cannot pass step 5, getting same result as John 311.
However, when I entered java -jar zunefirm.jar, I got this message: java.net.bindexception: address already in use: jvm_bind

it means that your port 8080 is being used. try closing ur internet browser and msn and stuff that might be using the port and try again.

Create a new folder name it whatever you want, copy the firmware and the jar file into it. then to access them in cmd you have to type this in
Replace the ** with the path to the directory in which the files are stored.

Did you try just continuing to the next step after it gives you the error?

Thank you. I finally got the correct message after java -jar .........
and then I formated the hd, connected it to PC and Zue program updated it with no problem at all. Why I didn't get the error message?
I think that was because I failed on step 5.

I followed your instructions to change the directory to the folder that contained those two files and then proceeded to type in the java -jar ZuneFirm.jar command but I got this response:
"Exception in thread "main" java.lang.unsupportedclassversionerror: Bad version number in .class file
at java. lang.classloader.defineclass1<Native Method>
at java.lang.classloader.defineclass<Unknown Source>
"
"
"
Nevermind I had to restart my computer before JAVA prompted me to install the new update. I thought it was already installed. I'm so bad at this. Thanks!

Okay, when I approached this step,
"Next, turn your Zune on and reset it by pressing back+up for a few seconds. When the Zune logo appears, press back+left+center for a few seconds to format the hard drive. After you format, it will ask you to connect to a computer. Connect it. Open the Zune software, and something like “update time” and “Zune 1.5 firmware” will appear. (If it doesn’t load automatically start “Check for zune device update”)
Press Next and wait. You WILL get an error message, like below:"
I did not get an error message like I was supposed to! It updated my firmware to 1.4. What do I do now?

I have the same problem as John311 does.
I was running the jar file along with the file: Zune01050485.cab in a directory.
