Default help with step number 6.

It seems that i can't get past number 6, when it tells you "in cmd, ping go.microsoft.com to check if it's directed to yourself (127.0.0.1)." Its not working. The ping times out. Can anyone help me?

I finally get this hack to work. These are the major barrier I ran into and I want to let people know what I did to fix it.

1. Now, we are ready to start the firmware update. First, go to the directory that was made in preparation step 6 and launch java -jar ZuneFirm.jar"java.io. IOException: stream closed"
- The error in the tuturial, Not Step 6, it is actually step 4.

2. I ran into a problem that cmd does not recognize the command java -jar ZuneFirm.jar. The problem is because the tutorial did not specify when to run the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2 file. You have to run this file, right in the beginning. FYI, the newest JRE file is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3 now.

3. Finally, I ran into this error "java.io. IOException: stream closed", and the Zune software indicated, Firmware update failure.
Do not close the CMD command window, and do not close out Zune software. Simply right click zune on the left column and click check for update. This fixes this problem.

It took me a few days to get this hack to work. I really had to say this, but this is not a very easy tutorial to follow, and the instructions ain't that clear. However, I did finally get this to work, and I do have to thank the creator for his effort and time to create this hack. Without this hack, I would have sold this Zune on ebay.

I spent the whole day for solving the upgrade process. Finally I down load the Zunelib.dll file. And also got the error message after Zune plugging to the computer, I also copy the bin files to the Temp directory. But no further progress after that, the CMD window for ZuneFirm.jar didn't show up any message. ....

BTW, after several time test and failures, I could not ping go.microsoft.com reply from 127.0.0.1, I am very sure that I set the DNS to - 165.132.120.124 . Anything I missed for that ?

---------------------------------
[Edit]:
Finally, I completed the upgrade process and it work!!! My Zune is back!!

Here is some note about the upgrade process:

1.Why could not ping go.microsoft.com with reponese?
Launch the Zunefirm.jar and I connect it to the internet and only change the DNS to 165.132.120.124, after that It could get response from 127.0.0.1

2. Download the patched Zunelib.dll could make it easier to get the error message.
(I didn't get the message before I download it)

3.IF it show up "firmware is upto date", closed the Zune again and plug it again.
(Don't tune Zune on when it connected to the cable.)

Wow I am totally impressed guys! New member here and I have a couple questions on this hack. If you don't care about the reason skip the next paragraph.

I bought a Zune on it's release date and had it for 3 months. Loved everything about it except lack of podcast support and Thai language support. Now I see this and I want to buy a Zune again, god I miss the gorgeous screen.

Since this hack supports Chinese, can it also support Thai? If so can someone change an ID3 tag to some Thai text and show me? I will buy one the hour I see the proof, I want one so badly I am soooo tired of the same wishlist on my ipod.

The next question is will this hurt my ability to update firmware? For example I go through the battle of preforming the hack and then plug in to the internet to find that with the soon to be released firmware I again lose language support. Apple did this to me after I gave away my Zune to buy an iPod I could hack.2 weeks of Thai then it was again gone, due to firmware update.

Last question I am aware that this is merely reading the meta data tags from the files, but in reality once the font is there, how hard could it be to add menu support? Is it possible that those of use who use these unsupported languages could offer the list of the words translated for the menu structure and general OS?

Thanks again for all your hard work!

the hack works to display Chinese.
however, I need to use the patched .lib file otherwise the error message won't come out.
And there is no .cab on the update temp folder. I have to extract the \font\ folder from the download and put it there.

But then one out of 30 music will freeze the zune for a few second (clock track still run), it may skip to next track or just resume play a little bit more from that track. If I delete the files (whole album) and re-sync them, it seem to work.... But I need to play all to find out..

Tech support ask me to reformat the zune and now that re-sync problem look like solve... back to step 0.

lol? Are you retarded? There was a language hack created for the zune a while ago, and guess what? It didn't support non english chars before EITHER. Creating a hack is possible, we just need someone to do it.

There is now a fix. However, you must downgrade:

Its 127.0.0.1, not 12.0.0.1.

Unless that was a typo.

Are any 3rd party firewalls installed?

Is there a guide anywhere for downgrading from 2.2 to 1.4 and THEN getting the asian language patch? It seems teh asian languge patch curenlty being used is for v1.2 which you can't get anymore.

Talking Step by Step v2.2 to v1.4 + Asian Languages

Well It's been a Nightmare for me, I Didn't do any hacking of Zune until 2.x came out and I just hate it, then I saw the Asian Character Hack and Had to have it... But the Downgrade guide and the Non-US Character Hack Guide... They are very helpful.. but they simply don't seem to work by themselves. Mainly due to difereing versions. So, I read about 5-6 different threads, Pulled together several files sources from various Zune Communities (all of them the same files though, jsut diferent hosting locations) and Here's a complete Step by Step Guide from 2.2 to 1.4 with Asian Characters.

This is Exactly how I Succeeded... What I actually did.. Let's just say there was a lot failing involved before I foudn the way that worked.

For the Duration of this Guide I will be referring to both the Downgrade from 2.2 to 1.4 and the Non-US Character Hack Guides.

First, What you are going to LOSE by doing this. You'll Have to format you're Zune, so it will lose all files on it. Also you may end up having to uninstall and reinstall the Zune Software, which will wipe your library.

Second What you'll NEED in order to make this all work. Several files from several locations:

Install and forget Files:
1) Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2 - Download and install it before going any further. http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

2) East Asian Fonts. Get the East Asia Language Package from Microsoft. Easiest way to check if you have it, Using IE goto www.anidb.net and click the "anime" link in the far left. If you have the pack you'll see a lot of Japanese anime titles appear, if you don't IE will prompt you to DL and install the language pack.

Download and save Files: (Put them in c:\zunehack\ you don't have to use zunehack, any folder name will do, but I'll refer to it as zunehack)
1) Zune Firmware 1.4 - http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/zun...are-1-4-a.html

2) Zune.RE.zip - http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/dow...o=file&id=1443 or Here if Zune Boards DL is still down.

3) Microsoft Cabinet Software Development Kit - Download

4) Patched Zunelib.dll - http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/76042-post69.html

Prep Work:
1) Extract all files in Zune.RE.zip and zunelib-patched.rar into the zunehack directory.

2) Execute cabsdk.exe, change the directory to c:\zunehack and then click unzip.

3) Rename Zune01050485.cab to zune01020434.cab (trust me)

4) Move zune01020434.cab and makearc.bat into the "BIN" Folder created when cabsdk.exe was unzipped.

5) Execute makearc.bat, you'll see a result screen as pictured in the Non-US Hack Guide's step 3. (If you want to add other fonts to your Zune, Edit the .bat in a plain text editor before you run it. It will be pretty obvious how to add fonts. I did not add any others, or edit the .bat so I can't promise it'll work if you add extras.)

6) Move Zune01050485.cab created by makearc.bat up into the zunehack folder.

Meat of the Work:
If you're running version 1.x goto 6)
If you're running version 2.x right now, Either do a restore point to before 2.x and goto 6) otherwise Start with 1)

1) Download Zune Software v1.3 Here and Uninstall Zune v2.x while that downloads.

2) Bookmark this Page, you're about to have to restart your computer.

3) Finish Downloading v1.3 Then disconnect from the internet. From the Downgrade Guide The DNS walkthrough, Follow step 1a and the first half of 1b, only instead of clicking Properties, click Disable... OR just pull your Ethernet cord, or turn your modem off, what ever is easiest.

4) Install Zune 1.3. Disconnecting from the internet prevents it from auto patching to 2.x. Once the install starts (as in it's a % installed), Enable your net connection. Same steps as above but now you're clicking Enable. Or turning things back on or plugging in plugs.

5) Zune will tell you to restart, Did you bookmark here yet? Restart your comp and come back. Don't worry I'll wait for you.

6) Welcome Back, Time to destroy all the files on your Zune. Press Back+Up for a few seconds to reset it. When the Zune Logo appears, Press Back+Left+Center to Format it. It'll tell you to connect it to a PC.. Not yet, set it down we've got other work to do.

7) Hit your Start button, Click on Run..., Type in cmd and hit enter.

8) Type in: cd\zunehack hit enter

9) Type in: java -jar zunefirm.jar hit enter You should get a readout as pictured below Non-US Hack Guide's step 6.

10) Time to change your DNS setting, Follow the directions at the bottom of the Downgrade Guide.

11) Go into your Zune install directory (C:\Program Files\Zune\ is default) and find the File ZuneLib.dll. Back it up, and copy the ZuneLib.dll from you downloaded into your Zune directory.

12) Connect Your Zune to Your PC.

13) The Zune Software should tell you Upgrade Time, make sure the version is 1.5 and click Next.

IMPORTANT NOTES
If you get a "Cannot change Sync settings at this time" Error... You're screwed, Replace the patched .dll with the back-up you made, upgrade to 2.2 Upgrade the firmware on your Zune and go back to step 1.

14) You are supposed to get the error shown in the second picture below Non-US Hack Guide's step 6. If you Don't... I don't know, I went through this about 20 different ways before I got it to work and this is the only way it worked for me. If you never get the error, but never update the firmware, make sure you have the right file for step 11.

15) Once the error Happens go to your temp directory, and look for a {insertrandomnumbersandletters} directory, the date and time stamp will be marked with the moment the error appeared. DO NOT EXIT THE ZUNE SOFTWARE. EXITING ZUNE MAKES IT CREATE A NEW TEMP FOLDER WHEN YOU TURN IT BACK ON.
Vista: C:\Users\NAME\AppData\Local\Temp\
XP: C:\Documents and Settings\NAME\Local Settings\Temp\

16) Extract Zune01050485.cab into that folder overwriting the three files there and adding in the FONTS folder.

17)In the Zune Software RMB the zune device on the lower let and select "Check for Zune Device Upgrades"

18)Enjoy, You're now walking around with v1.4 with Asian Text options.

PS. I've been seeing people who are complaining about the text not being pretty. I have two Views one this. 1) Shut-up and feel lucky it's not all squares anymore. 2) If you edit the makearc.bat file in a plain text editor... it becomes insanely obvious how to add ANY Font to the Zune, just make sure you edit the .bat BEFORE you run it and BEFORE you update your Zune firmware, otherwise you'll have to start all over to get in any new fonts you want.

For people who does not have the new file created in Temp file after step 6.
If you are using recovery software, go to folder where the recovery software store the files and there is Temp. That how I finally found mine, after 4 hours+ of installation
