Briant..,
I am at the same error point. After I find the latest GUID folder, I copied the modified cab into that directory, unconnect my zune, then reconnect to get the firmware update window, and it gets the same error and then creates a new GUID. Java jar has been continually running.
Is there any way to update the firmware without unconnecting the zune or restarting the software? Maybe that's my problem?
EDIT: OK I figured out the problem. What I did was, do not disconnect/reconnect or restart the software. Just find the latest GUID folder, copy the modified cab file there, uncompress everything in the mod. cab file in the directory as well(this might not be necessary but that's what i did). Then goto Options -> Sync -> Zune -> Check for Zune Updates, and everything worked fine.
Spent like an hour try to figure out what went wrong and finally found the above post. Viola! And THANK YOU!
There are around 5 or 6 folders in the temp folder that have the three bin files in the folder. Do I paste the Zune01050485.cab in all the folders? Or is there a specific one? Also do you just right click, press extract here and overwrite the files? Thanks
Well what I've done so far is finding the folder that is the most recent and then pasted the cab file in the folder manually and then extracting and overwriting the files. I then open up the Zune program for a firmware update, but I still see the error message.
I finally got everything to work. Thanks everyone for your help!
I have the same problem with you.I just wonder whether i open up the ZUNE program one time, there'll be a temp folder has 3bin files in it.and I still see the error message.
Do you make it done with it?looking for the answer.thanks
I've double checked every step multiple times, but I can not get the error message from the firmware update to appear. ZuneFirm.jar is running, the DNS is changed, I don't see anything wrong, but still no error.
Cool I did mine, If your like me and a 1st time installer, Youll get confused, Be sure to run your Zune software all the way through 1st so it lets you get into the Library mode to update zune again.
But yup, Updated fine, Gotta test the fonts, but I am sure it works. Thanks =)
I got almost all the way through the tutorial but there is one part thats not working for me. I formated my Zune like it said and I ran the "java -jar ZuneFirm.jar" thing and "Zune01050485" file is where it's supposed to be. but the problem is when i try to update it i always get an error message and in the cmd window it always ends in "java.io. IOException: stream closed". I've tried it alot of times and I don't know what I should do.
fresheveryday, I get those too. Don't worry about it. Just keep going.
So, from what I can see, you got all the way up to doing the java -jar ZuneFirm.jar and running the update. Anyway, from there here's what I did.
I went to users(I have vista)/appdata.../temp. Now arrange your icons by date like people said. Check all new folders that is enclosed by curly brackets {}. If any of them have eboot.bin, ek.bin or whatever, delete those folders. All of em that have them.
When I did it, it didn't seem to work because I kept exiting the zune program after the update error. Apparently, if you exit the program and try to update again, it'll make a new folder and dump those bin files in. So, to start fresh, delete them all.
Now, with the ZuneFirm.jar running, start up Zune and update. After the error, press close and cancel the update BUT DO NOT EXIT THE ZUNE PROGRAM. Go to your user/appdata/.../temp. The latest folder should be the only folder with eboot.bin, ek.bin, etc (since you deleted any previous ones beforehand). I copied the Zune01050485.cab to that folder and extracted everything (overwritting the old .bin files).
Go back to your currently running Zune program, and right click your zune on the left column and click check for updates. It should work this time.... it did for me.
Hope it helps =)
[edit] Yay, my zune shows asian characters xD! Thank you thank you!!!

Wow this is such an amazingly horrible tutorial. All just to get some asian character that should have already been on the zune.
So as you can tell i am in the same boat as almost everyone else.
So i am stuck on the ****ty java -jar ZuneFirm.jar step. Either it says its unable to access or that its busy. I moved both the cad and jar files to a folder (which i dubbed the "****ty step") by itself on my D drive. This way i can just change the directory from c to d and type "java -jar ZuneFirm.jar" am i correct in doing this? Right now my zune is a paper weight and its really pissing me off. Is there any way someone can help me out? Also should i do the dns step before the jar step or after? I think once i get this figured out i am going to rewrite this tutorial with everyone on this threads help and input. No one should have to go through the hell that we have. Poor halo edition zune.
I get to step 6 in the hack process successfully. ZuneFirm (java -jar ZuneFirm.jar) is running, and receives update requests as it should, since I see it responding every time the Zune software does something update related. That's fine. After the first firmware update attempt, I get the "Zune software cannot find the file" error, and I get the expected new Temp\{...........} folder. That's fine, too. I then copy Zune01050485.cab into the new folder, and extract its contents there. In Zune, I then do Sync->Check for New Updates, but I still get the "Zune software cannot find the file" error. I do not get another new Temp\{.........} folder created.
This sounds like the problem that @bdragonomega was seeing, and I have tried his suggestions from above, making sure I start with no Temp\{.......} folders and that I leave the Zune software running during the entire process. However, I continue to get the error message every time I try to update the firmware.
One note: If I click on the Web Help button from the error message, I see a complaint about not being able to find Zune01010485.cab, but no mention of Zune01050485.cab as I would expect...
One more note: I'm running Windows XP Pro, rather than Vista as @bdragonomega is running.

Reason: forgot to note XP vs. Vista
