[DL] Files for Zune Non-US Character Hack

Hi All

After connecting the zune for the first time, i only see the 3 bin and not the cab file. The Command Prompt window mention something about java.io.IOException: Stream closed...

Any idea what might be wrong?

This may seem a bit odd, but I can't seem to pass step 2-3. My problem is when I press the makearc thing, I get an error saying

Extract firmware file
ERROR!
Press any key to continue . . . _

So I'm guessing I didn't extract the firmware? Well, from what I know I did...that's the stuff inside the file that was provided saying Zune Firmware v.1.2 - Download right? If it is, then I think I did everything correct. Anyways, if anyone could help me or maybe tell me if this "hack" even works, I'd appreciate it. Thank! (and sorry for the trouble)

I just got my zif/ce connector. What I did is to remove all the fonts, and just add one simsun(because I'm using simp-chinese). This simsun is a modifed version, which can support trad-chinese and some of the japanese as well.

Then the wierd display just gone.

You can find this simsun here. It can also be used to replace the one in Vista, which is ugly and worse than XP:

For trad-chinese users, there's also a modified mingliu font.

@slider, it's okay to have that error.
But the cab file should be copied manually to that directory.
@Briant, did you put the cab file you downloaded in the same directory?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that...but I think so? Anyways, I'll post links/pics of what I did step by step later...need to raise my post count 1st...which is odd since I have like 6-7post...but the thing says I have 3...w/e

I mean, you should put makearc.bat, zune0xxxxxx.cab in cabsdk\bin directory. Then run makearc.bat inside a cmd prompt.

I am Chinese and using simp-Chinese too. We have to have zif/ec connector in order to remove those fonts? What if I don't have one?

Arabic font support would be out of the question cuz of right to left language, right?

You dont need to remove them jsut sync the one you want and name it whichever font you want ot replace

So when I do this hack. Will it just totally wipe out all English so it's all Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. Or do I get a choice in settings to choose which Language I want to use?

I'm pretty sure Arabic would also work, since they can get Asain characters on. Anyways, in case you don't know, in Asian they read from right to left...hope this solves your problem.

Your english songs will remain in english... the fonts are only applied to Korean, Japanese, Chinese songs.

Oh alright, so my Jrock artist The Gazette will be in Japanese? As well as Utada Hikaru? and stuff like that? VS. Everything in Japanese, Korean, and Chinese? Because if it's that easy then I might as well do it. Because I do know Japanese and such. I just didn't want eveything to end up being in Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana.

Zune is not smart enough to do this translation work for you. Maybe Zune 10, Zune 11, or ....

You don't need to extract the cab file. Just put that cab in that directory and run makearc is okay.

I use zif connector because I don't want to reformat my zune again. 25G+ content is too much.

Just as LedZepp said, if you don't have a zif connector, just repeat the downgrade+upgrade steps and put only simsun.ttc in. You may need to modify makearc.bat, which should be pretty easy.

So...pretty much skip the 1st pic/step and just extract the makearc and run it? cause....that doesn't exactly work. Anyways, I was wondering if you could explain in futher detail of what you typed, since I'm a bit confused by it.

take the firmware .cab file, Do not extract it, put it in the folder with the makearc and run makearc. Thats it, dont do anything else, It will do everything

I know that. I'm just saying I don't want everything on my Zune to be in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. All I need to know is that to my Japanese songs and such show up in Japanese? As everything else that normally shows up in English will stay in English? Or does EVERYTHING on my Zune turn into Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. That's all I'm asking.

It's really quite simple. Songs with English MetaTags will remain in English, and songs with Japanese MetaTags will be in Japanese.
