good luck. I doubt you'll get a custom firmware on the zunes... it hasn't happened yet, and it's not as simple as you're making it out to be. It requires true hacking, in every sense of the word.

Look, I know we all think it cant work, but let him try. Dont cut him off like that when he is doing something for the community.

Re-opened. For now.

Thanks you sooo much charge seriously everyone around here is soooo negative when it comes to hacking or anything that isnt supported by microsoft

seriously people need to chill out and stop with that everyone has been so discouraged from doing anything at all i personally think thats why theres so little apps flowing out of this cummunity is becasue of the "well it wont work anyway" type of attitude around here there needs to be a change

have a great day

Um, what? You can dl the firmware separately, sure somebody has the link. You can't just put the hd firmware on the old Zunes due to hardware differences and you can't just copy and paste parts of the HD firmware into the old firmware because that changes the hash of the file and without updating the signature (which you need either a ton of computing power + time or Bill Gate's approval) you have the hardware check which will kill anything youdo.

The reason there's such a negative attitude about Zune hacking isn't because MS doesn't approve it, it's because we've tried and every time we hit MS' security. I heard rumors of an exploit from a well known member here, however either he magically "forgot about it" after being sooo uptight about other people not getting the credit or he was lying about it.

So to sum it up, Non-MS firmware needs either a hardware hack, or a very clever exploit (the common of which have been tried)

I'm curious about the hardware hacking aspect of things, but de-soldering/re-soldering/hacking BGA (ball grid array) mounted components such as the tegra chip makes things such as modchips extremely inaccessible to the public or even casual hackers. I'm not entirely optimistic about the prospect of a hardhack.

Anyone want to try contacting the iPhone Dev team? They seem to have no problem with any form of security.

Apple obviously does not have the kind of security that Microsoft does. The Zune's firmware can not be replaced with non-official firmware at all, no matter how many times anyone tries. When trying to install firmware onto a Zune, it checks to make sure that it is properly signed by Microsoft. If it is not, it will not install it.

Obviously, the only real possibility left is try to be able to run third-party applications on the Zune. The firmware is based on Windows CE 5.0, so it should be able to run Windows CE applications just fine.
