Default Problems with new hard drive

Hello all,

I am at a loss with the problem with my zune. I replaced a failing HD in the zune with a new exact model as the old one (yes, even Toshiba brand). Looks like its back together fine, boot it up, zune startup screen then goes to problem #3 'please wait' which I have read is normal as it needs to format and partition the new drive. However, its been 16 hours and its still on that screen. Once in a while it makes 'hard drive noise' (a normal amount, seems the HD is fine), so it seems like its doing something. At hour 12, since its not responding to any button commands, I unplugged the battery and plugged back in to have it startup with zune startup logo, then back to problem #3. Any comments, suggestions? How long does it take?

22ish hours and going 'please wait' strong

Questions:

- What Zune version?
- What was the model number of the old drive?
- What is the model number of the new drive? Is is the same model # as the old one?
- Where did you purchase the drive from? Was it new/used/refurbished? Any warranty?

The model #'s are critical, especially if it's an 80GB.

-Gen 1
-MK3008GAL
-MK3008GAL, yes
-Ebay, new, from a person who claimed to pick them from a direct Toshiba overstock auction (it still had a good amount of storage 'gunk/foam' on it, so I'm confident it was never used), bought ASIS

I got a new HD for the Zune because it was freezing/dieing/doing random stuff that I after a good amount of researched concluded was because of a dieing/overlyfragmented HD, but I suppose it could have been due to the motherboard

Thanks for the info. I've bought quite a few 1.8 inch drives "as-is" from eBay, and my results have been hit or miss. If it was new, it shouldn't have any foam on it - foam means it was pulled from another player (like an iPod, possibly). Check the bottom left corner of the drive label, to confirm that there's no Apple logo on it.

My only suggestion to you is to test the drive outside of the Zune - it's really the only way to ensure that the drive is working. And, if it is working, then it could be another problem (like the circuit board). If you are willing to wait a few weeks, this converter should work on a computer with an internal IDE interface, or an IDE USB external interface:

DealExtreme: $4.89 ZIF to 3.5-inch Bilateral IDE Hard Drive Converter

I'm going on the assumption that you are technical, since you've already opened up your Zune and did surgery on it.

Thank you very much roebeet, I'm debating between buying that converter or just cutting my losses, selling the zune w/out hard drive, and buying another. Oh well, thanks alot
