Lightbulb Step by Step v2.2 to v1.4 + Asian Characters

Well It's been a Nightmare for me, I Didn't do any hacking of Zune until 2.x came out and I just hate it, then I saw the Asian Character Hack and Had to have it... But the Downgrade guide and the Non-US Character Hack Guide... They are very helpful by themseves.. but they simply don't seem to work when trying to d both. Mainly due to differeing versions. So, I read about 5-6 different threads, Pulled together several files from various Zune Communities (all of them the same files though, just different hosting locations) and Here's a complete Step by Step Guide from 2.2 to 1.4 with Asian Characters.

This is Exactly how I Succeeded... What I actually did.. Let's just say there was a lot failing involved before I found the way that worked.

For the Duration of this Guide I will be referring to both the Downgrade from 2.2 to 1.4 and the Non-US Character Hack Guides.

First, What you are going to LOSE by doing this. You'll Have to format you're Zune, so it will lose all files on it. Also you may end up having to uninstall and reinstall the Zune Software, which will wipe your library.

Second What you'll NEED in order to make this all work. Several files from several locations:

Install and forget Files:
1) Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2 - Download and install it before going any further. http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

2) East Asian Fonts. Get the East Asia Language Package from Microsoft. Easiest way to check if you have it, Using IE goto www.anidb.net and click the "anime" link in the far left. If you have the pack you'll see a lot of Japanese anime titles appear, if you don't IE will prompt you to DL and install the language pack.

Download and save Files: (Put them in c:\zunehack\ you don't have to use zunehack, any folder name will do, but I'll refer to it as zunehack)
1) Zune Firmware 1.4 - http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/zun...are-1-4-a.html

2) Zune.RE.zip - http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/dow...o=file&id=1443 or Here if Zune Boards DL is still down.

3) Microsoft Cabinet Software Development Kit - Download

4) Patched Zunelib.dll - http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/76042-post69.html

Prep Work:
1) Extract all files in Zune.RE.zip and zunelib-patched.rar into the zunehack directory.

2) Execute cabsdk.exe, change the directory to c:\zunehack and then click unzip.

3) Rename Zune01050485.cab to zune01020434.cab (trust me)

4) Move zune01020434.cab and makearc.bat into the "BIN" Folder created when cabsdk.exe was unzipped.

5) Execute makearc.bat, you'll see a result screen as pictured in the Non-US Hack Guide's step 3. (If you want to add other fonts to your Zune, Edit the .bat in a plain text editor before you run it. It will be pretty obvious how to add fonts. I did not add any others, or edit the .bat so I can't promise it'll work if you add extras.)

6) Move Zune01050485.cab created by makearc.bat up into the zunehack folder.

Meat of the Work:
If you're running version 1.x goto 6)
If you're running version 2.x right now, Either do a restore point to before 2.x and goto 6) otherwise Start with 1)

1) Download Zune Software v1.3 Here and Uninstall Zune v2.x while that downloads.

2) Bookmark this Page, you're about to have to restart your computer.

3) Finish Downloading v1.3 Then disconnect from the internet. From the Downgrade Guide The DNS walkthrough, Follow step 1a and the first half of 1b, only instead of clicking Properties, click Disable... OR just pull your Ethernet cord, or turn your modem off, what ever is easiest.

4) Install Zune 1.3. Disconnecting from the internet prevents it from auto patching to 2.x. Once the install starts (as in it's a % installed), Enable your net connection. Same steps as above but now you're clicking Enable. Or turning things back on or plugging in plugs.

5) Zune will tell you to restart, Did you bookmark here yet? Restart your comp and come back. Don't worry I'll wait for you.

6) Welcome Back, Time to destroy all the files on your Zune. Press Back+Up for a few seconds to reset it. When the Zune Logo appears, Press Back+Left+Center to Format it. It'll tell you to connect it to a PC.. Not yet, set it down we've got other work to do.

7) Hit your Start button, Click on Run..., Type in cmd and hit enter.

8) Type in: cd\zunehack
hit [ENTER]

9) Type in: java -jar zunefirm.jar
hit [ENTER]
You should get a readout as pictured below Non-US Hack Guide's step 6.

10) Time to change your DNS setting, Follow the directions at the bottom of the Downgrade Guide.

11) Go into your Zune install directory (C:\Program Files\Zune\ is default) and find the File ZuneLib.dll. Back it up (ZuneLib.dll.bak is what I did), and copy the ZuneLib.dll you downloaded into your Zune directory.

12) Connect Your Zune to Your PC.

13) The Zune Software should tell you "Upgrade Time", make sure the version is 1.5 and click Next.

IMPORTANT NOTES
If you get a "Cannot change Sync settings at this time" Error... You're screwed, Replace the patched .dll with the back-up you made, upgrade to 2.2 Upgrade the firmware on your Zune and go back to step 1.

14) You are supposed to get the error shown in the second picture below Non-US Hack Guide's step 6.
If you Don't... I don't know, I went through this about 20 different ways before I got it to work and this is the only way it worked for me. If you never get the error, but never update the firmware, make sure you have the right file for step 11.

14b) Close The error. But leave the Zune software running.

15) Go to your temp directory, and look for a {insertrandomnumbersandletters} directory, the date and time stamp will be marked with the moment the error appeared.
DO NOT EXIT THE ZUNE SOFTWARE. EXITING ZUNE MAKES IT CREATE A NEW TEMP FOLDER WHEN YOU TURN IT BACK ON.
Vista: C:\Users\NAME\AppData\Local\Temp\
XP: C:\Documents and Settings\NAME\Local Settings\Temp\

16) Extract Zune01050485.cab from zunehack into that folder overwriting the three files there and adding in the FONTS folder. (The Fonts folder being the missing files it couldn't find.)

17)In the Zune Software RMB the zune device in the lower left and select "Check for Zune Device Upgrades"

18)Enjoy, You're now walking around with v1.4 with Asian Text options.

PS. I've been seeing people who are complaining about the text not being pretty. I have two Views on this.
1) Shut-up and feel lucky it's not all squares anymore.
2) If you edit the makearc.bat file in a plain text editor... it becomes insanely obvious how to add ANY Font to the Zune, just make sure you edit the .bat BEFORE you run it and BEFORE you update your Zune firmware, otherwise you'll have to start all over to get in any new fonts you want. Also, keep in mind I didn't edit it so I can't promise it'll work.

Thank you very much for the detailed writeup. Perhaps I missed it, but at what point should normal DNS be restored? Before or after step 17?

I put my DNS back to normal when I was all done, so I'd say do it as step 18) I'll edit it to reflect this.

Hmm... Nevermind seems I can't edit the post anymore. Oh well, Just restore your DNS when you're all done. Once your Zune is updated the way you want you won't need the DNS altered anymore.

if you uninstalled zune software v 2.2, do you still have anything to worry about?

No actually, uninstalling 2.2 is a requiremnt to do this. The only issue you will have is having to rebuild your library since 2.2's library filesa re incompatible with 1.4.

I noticed the Pictures are gone from the Downgrade Guide for altering your DNS, so I'm putting detailed instructions for that here.

Changing DNS:
1)Open the Start menu and Right Click "Network Places" then select 'properties'.

2)In the new window, Right Click the connection that supplies your access to the internet and choose 'properties' again.

3)In the new window Scroll Down to "Internet Protocol", highlight it, then click the "Properties" button.

4)Mark the "Use the following DNS Server Addresses" option and fill in the address: 165.132.120.124

5) Click 'OK'

PUTTING DNS BACK TO NORMAL:
1)Follow steps 1-3 from Above, Then make sure the option to automatically configure your DNS is selected.

2) Click 'OK'

I Hope this clears up any confusion.

That's a shortcut method, another way to get to what you need is to actually start the cmd program through the Start menu.

Start Menu-->All Programs-->Accessories-->Command Prompt

This will replace Step 7, Pick-up at Step 8 with the new window that opens.

I doubt it. If it did, you would lose touch pad features among others.

No, to my knowledge they haven't figured out a way to make the asian Characters hack work on the 2.x version of Zune, which is why you have to downgrade. From what I here it's because they can't find where in the new soft/firmware the fonts are stored/accessed.

I didn't actually make these two hacks (One asian font, the other the downgrade), I just melded together the directions for doing each one by itself so that the rest of you wanting to do both don't have to spend the hours I did in order to figure out how.

Default Zune 80GB: Downgrade Firmware and Software from 2.3 to 1.4?

Can I downgrade my Zune 80GB running v. 2.3? If so, will I have access to automatic playlist, the equalizer, and flagging for removal. For all the talk about the improved Zune, I can't understand why they would remove these standard features.

I do not know if an 80 can be downgraded. I have a 30 myself. If the older version Firmware doesn't install properly on your 80 though you can simply upgrade again with no real penalties.
You'll get all the features of the 1.4 software if the firmware can operate properly on your 80.

Default nice job

Thanks a lot! I did this about five times before I had to use my brain :P It turns out I didn't have the right fonts installed (even though I did!) so I just dug out the fonts section of the .bat file, so the .cab could be created properly. After that everything else was smooth sailing. Thank you a lot, I really hated the old stuff

It should pop up almost instantly.

The main issue that makes it not appear the is not having the patched dll file in the proper place... If you did everything perfectly I'm really not sure, I had to do this like 15 different times start to finish and this was the only way that worked for me.

I think their hosting has them on a bandwidth limit, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't as of right now it's downloadable (March 20, 2008 11:23PM EST)

I'll see if I can throw it up someplace and offer a more stable link.

http://www.malific.com/zunelib-patched.rar - Stable and much faster.

I stuck between these 2 part..

I changed the DNS, disabled the internet,
but i cannot install the zune software 1.3, it says it does not support my OS!
I am now using vista sp1 32-bit.

ps: I used this installer instead and works fine now.
