still not working
I have -
Vista Basic 32bit
FW 2.2
Program v2
Windows is up to date
I tried installing HD patch 3.0 but failed then tried 4.2 and was successfully patched but could not find in explorer.
Rebooted my computer, reinstalled patch which was successful again but still cannot find my zune.
It is saying I don't have permission to save to my Zune through the Hack and through the Reg changes. Am I doing something wrong? I can see the drive in the tree but if I try to drag in any file it says I don't have permission.
You can manually check in regedit to see if the required keys are changed.
On that note:
Neither the patch OR the manual editing regedit doesn't work for me.
Using:
Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit
It says my Windows is up to date, maybe someone would like to link me to the portable drivers, just to make sure.
I have the first generation Zune (v1) with the latest firmware, 2.2
Any other info?
I really prefer not to roll back and fetch my files and reroll to v2.2...
Ok, for those who couldn't get the patch to work even after restarting, updating , etc. and couldn't get it to work manually:
Reinstall everything, that's how I did it...Reinstall the software, the drivers for it, delete the regkeys (just in case). Though it seems that only changing the regkey would work for me, not the patch (after the entire re-installation).
And you'll get 2 Zunes, but that doesn't really matter.
AS sil3ntdarkn355 stated, I did pretty much the same. If you see my previous post from November, I could always see the 2 icons in My Computer and was able to view the contents of my Zune, but could not add any type of files.
My steps:
a. Uninstall Zune software
b. Used regedit and removed all keys related to Zune
b1. Forgot - Installed MS dotnetfx2.0, the install indicated that I had dotnetfx already, so I chose "repair".
c. Reboot
d. Installed Zune software
e. Executed Zune software and connected Zune player once to ensure it would be found.
f. Closed software and disconnected Zune player
e. Used Windows Task Manager and killed all Zune processes
g. Used the Zune patcher - 4.0 - Patched successful (did not even look at regedit values, but you can)
h. Executed Zune software and connected Zune player
i. Used My Computer and could see 2 Zune icons again.
j. Okay, here is where I think some us get tripped up. Using the Zune software, start a transfer of a large file to your Zune. This will give you time to experiment with file transfers via My Computer, Explorer windows. I started a transfer of an MP4 movie, this takes extra time because the Zune software has to convert MP4 to be used on the Zune.
k. While the movie is being transfered, I was able to create folders on the root directory of the Zune player, where you see the folders called Music, Video, etc... I was then able to copy a zipped file to the Zune in one of the new folders. This the HD function. You cannot view your folders your created on the Zune itself, only when the Zune is connected to your computer.
l. The final test, I took a downloaded album that contained the .mp3 files along with album art. Still while the movie file was in transfer, I copied the album folder (the entire directory at once) into the Zune player Music folder. There was even a pop up window that indicated that the album art files were not in the proper format and they possibly could not be viewed on the Zune. I let the copy process copy all files.
m. I stopped the Zune movie file transfer, then closed the Zune software. Disconnecting my player.
n. Started the Zune player and selected Music, now I could see my new album, although it indicated "Unknown", but the songs still contained the ID3 data. I think if all files had been converted at least once for the Zune, the album art and title would be displayed. I will have to test again.
o. Using the Zune software again, and starting a movie file sync, it actually remembered where it left off, I was able to delete the album via My Computer explorer window.
p. And finally, the movie that was being transferred, I let it finished and it plays and appears to be intact.
Well, I tried your patch and all it did for me was to crash the Zune software on start up, every time. I've tried reinstalling and all that to no avail.

What now?
Try to:
1. Uninstall the Zune software
2. Clear the registry
3. Ensure your .NET Framework is 2.0
4. Reboot
5. Start over, by installing the Zune software first
Hi there im having a small prob with the HDD hack(obviously)
i Tried using the 4.2 HDD patcher and it says fail when i try to apply it
I am using:
Windows Vista 32 bit
FW 2.3
SW 2.1.888.2
I have tired running the program in XP compatibility mode and still no luck
i have currently applied the hack manually(regedit version)
but plan to use this at work as well and they may not look too nicely on registry changes
ok ive tried every possible solution in this forum and i am still unable to copy any files over onto the zune drive. When i try copying something over while syncing it says "device is busy" then once it stops syncing and tries to copy it says "you do not have permission". I am currently running:
Winxp Pro X86 SP2
.Net Framwork 20 installed
2.0 zune software
latest zune 2.2 firmware
zune 30g
If you want to drag and drop to the zune first you must do the hack and then you have to sync something to it with the zune software.(I generally download a big podcast and use it.)
Anyway after that you can do whatever with the Zunes Hard drive. If you want to send the files wirelessly to another zune you can save a file in the pictures folder.(You can also take a whole collection of music and compress it into a zip folder and send it all at once.)
Now change the file extension on the file in the pictures folder to .jpg. Now the zune will recognize it as a picture and send it. (You MUST put the file on the zune before changing the file extension!)
The only problem is the person who you send it to has to have the Hard drive hack on to so that they can rename the files and put them in the correct folder.
The .jpg hack dosent work with the new firmware. The Zune wont recognize any file without it being synced with the software. I tried syncing the .jpg's with the software and as i expected an error was thrown. I Synced a normal pic with the name changed to the name of the file.jpg that I had originally tried to sync. Then I thought I could just swap the files by dropping the original in and click replace and maybe the zune wouldnt know the difference. I was wrong again it wont let you drop in a file with .jpg as the extension so I Put in the .exe file and then changed it and It still wouldnt let me so Im stumped and mad at microsoft for being so gay about their software.
Does anyone know if there is any other mp3 player with bluetooth or wifi that supports FTP so I could send friends programs and other cool stuff.
I have had a similar problem to everyone here and also a problem where my videos just disappeared on my zune and left only two meanwhile on the zune software It showed I had about 7 files on my zune device. I wiped the zune clean and now all my files are there I just get a problem with one file syncing up. I may try moving the file onto the zune itself while it is syncing to see if that works. It is an mp4 file so it may not read it since it has to convert the file. I will post when I do try this out.
