Did you make sure the zune was unpluged and all the zune software/services were closed/off?

I used the version 4.2 and it was the first time I got it to work with out the error saying it failed. But I do still seem to have 2 icons.

Exclamation 30GB zune HD hack meltdown! I am in serious trouble!

running win xp pro with newest (2.2) firmware

i was looking at the hard drive hacks and thought it was neat, so i followed the directions through the registry editor and could not find a folder with the right contents. so i resorted to one of the patches (the one that looks like a zune when you open it) and clicked run. it did not work, even when i restarted my compy. so i looked again and found another patcher, so i opened it, clicked run, and it said "failed" and still no portible hard drive. dropping the idea, i went back to the zune software and it did not show up at all. i looked around and finaly un-installed it's driver (stupid i know) and re-installed it. now it is not in the device manager, not on the zune software, mtill cant find the right place in the registry, and when i plug it in, it charges, but my desctop shows "foound ne hardware zune" and flashes constantly, so i cant open the install new hardware icon in the control panel unless the zune is unplugged! i totaly screed myself. i even forgot to back up my registry, and cant even find where to roll it back to the LAST time i did. help please, someone kind in this world

jengatime, look in \windows\system32\drivers for wpdusb.sys.backup and WudfRd.sys.backup. These 2 files are needed for the Zune to work in Windows. I ran into this issue with another patcher as it appears to have renamed those 2 files. After that, my Zune was never recognized properly in the device manager. Rename them without the .backup at the end (may need to reboot). If that doesn't fix it, try removing it from the device manager and then have the device manager search for new hardware.

Yes, I even checked to make sure ZuneLauncher.exe wasn't running, and it still comes back with that error, and still won't show up in my computer. does vista have anything to do with it? (is there a certain folder i need 'ownership' of in order to make this work?)

i did notice that it shows up still in device manager as a portable device, and with driver version 2.1.8... instead of 2.2. just a thought..

one last thing.. i have vista installed on a drive labeled V instead of default C..

Yeah, I got the hack to work fine, it shows up and all, but the reason I wanted to use the hack was to delete some songs and artists that wern't showing up in the zune software. So I applied the patch, and it worked, and I went and deleted all the album art and the songs. So I'm thinking "wow, these guys are gods blah blah" and than I open my zune, and there are no songs there, but there are still artists and albums. Help?

Default New to Zune and have a new Zune30

Hello - I am new to this whole new Zune thing. I have searched the web for hacks, tips, tricks for the external hard drive.

Here is what I have:

$99 brown Zune 30 from J&R

Zune setup disk automatically installs Zune 2.0 software

HD hack patch: Used the one from popsci.com that changes the registry settings.

What works:

In "My Computer" I can see two Zune icons of the name of my Zune player. I can click on either one and I can see the "Storage" icon and enter this folder. Then I can see all of the default folders in my Zune (Music, Video, etc...). I can delete any file inside of any folder from here within the Explorer window that first started from "My Computer"

Zune 2.* software works and I can sync music and pictures within the default software. Everything looks good at this point

What does not work:

Drag and drop - First I just tried to drag and drop a file from an Explorer window spawned from "My Documents" to one of the default folders in the Zune player. This did not work.

Create Folder - Same thing, permissions problem with the folders located on the Zune player prevent folder creation.

Note: Then I found out that you only have write permissions to your Zune when the Zune software is syncing with the player. I tried the following tricks to gain write access to the Zune:

* Opened the Task Manager - found zune.exe running, started a file transfer of a photo album within the Zune software and then killed zune.exe before the transfer was finished. Write access was still locked.

* In another web find, someone indicated that you must let a file transfer complete, leave the Zune software running, and you will have write access via the Explorer window. Did not work.

Bottom line:

If there are flaws in my process, please help me. Also, is it true that everything got disabled after the recent release of the Zune 2.* software? If so, are there any new work arounds?

Thanks,

rob

Got it working on two computers, xp pro and vista (both 32bit) zune version 2.2, latest version of zune software.

XP:

Install zune software > plug zune > unplug zune
Install patch from the main thread
Plug zune > open my computers to see 2 zune icons
Open zune software > sync some files (mp3s, videos, etc)
(While still syncing) Transfer whatever files > Close zune software to cancel sync (optional)

**note: I haven't been able to make a new folder on the zune, but i just used my "videos" folder for transfering files. I successfully transferred a ~90 rar files doing it this way.

Vista:
Install zune software > plug zune > unplug zune
Install patch > plug zune
open my computers > 2 zune icons
open zune software > sync zune with mp3s, videos, etc, > transfer files via method above...

**note: for some reason i didnt have to sync my zune again after the first sync to transfer my files, i was just able to drag and drop after that.

Got it to work manualy, and doing a Find on the string "EnableLegacySupport" repeatedly brought up two more instances, which I changed. Now it works fine, but I also have two Zunes in my computer. Still can't drag and drop, though. Any fix for that?

still cant get it to work. tried looking for "EnableLegacySupport" strings in registry, only found 2, both set to "1", and that didnt work. I need this to work because the new zune software messed up my library a bit and I ended up with multiple copies of certain albums that dont exist in the software's list of music on my zune, but do exist on the zune in reality. so i want to basically go into the hdd and manually remove these songs since the software obviously sucks at it...

Here is the page via the completed Hacks section of this forum.

zunehdpatch-4-0

I know the page and link says 4.0 but when you download the ".EXE" version it will be 4.2. I hope this helps out.

tnynyn,
Thank you so much. I followed your instruction and it worked beautifully. Now I don't have to sync and can drag and drop any file to my new folder under Zune.

Default Can delete files, but not drag & drop to or from

Hi,

thanks for your brilliant work--very slick.

When I try to drag & drop from my PC, I get the message

"FileName.mp3 could not be placed on the device. You do not have permission to create this item."

When I try to drag & drop from the Zune, I get an "Access Denied" message.

Vista Home Premium 32, UAC turned off
.net latest
Zune 30 w/latest firmware

Many thanks!

q.

You must be syncing to be able to put files onto or get files off of the device
