This might just me being selfish, but I like my Zune games being free

But yes, the developers who dedicate their time into this stuff do deserve a bit of green in the wallets.

Of course I did.. months before I joined here. As soon as I heard of XNA I joined the creators club to make games for the XBox 360.

I find this very sad, because its going to persuade a lot of talented developers away from making cool Zune apps. I know personally I'm abandoning Zune dev (maybe not completely) to make Xbox titles, because let's face it, I'm poor. If they ever opened that up for the Zune Marketplace though in a manner similar to Xbox Community Games, it would really give the Zune a competitive edge over iPod (where if I am correct, Apple decides what apps are added to the store)... but in the meantime, I have to put all my skills into the toilet and make a profit!

I honestly disagree...completely. This is a lose lose situation, while the creator gets paid if anyone downloads there game, that doesn't mean it is going to be very good. On top of that there would be no way to ensure that the game you are buying is good. Which means you could have just spent 200 Microsoft points on a horrible game!

That is why there would be customer reviews. If no one else liked the game, you can probably be sure that you will not like it, either. However, if the game has incredible reviews, you can be fairly confident that the game is really good.

I realize this has been said many times before, but... We make games for you because we choose to. We are not obligated to make games for you, especially for free.

My opinion is that most of the games that are currently available are fairly easy to make, i.e. Does not require months to develop. These should be free. However, games that are (or will be) extremely exceptional, such as Valgard's Fate, and one that I am planning on making, should be paid for. This is because people that make games that require a great amount of personal time to be invested do deserve to be compensated. We could be using out time to be doing other things. Instead, we are making games for you.

That would work as well. That way, the person can "try before they buy".

If it does happen, it'll almost certainly work the way xbox live's arcade does.

I do not have xBox live, but I am sure about how it works.

The idea of non-free games for the Zune is a dangerous path to follow, and a payment based game marketplace would likely destroy Zune gaming as we know it.

If Microsoft created a Zune games marketplace, it would likely operate similarly to XBOX Community Games. In that program, developers that can't afford to drop $100 need not apply. Furthermore, you not only have to pay up to code up, but also have to mobilize an army of those who have done the same to vote for your game. If you manage to get your game approved, then the game will be available to those that go looking for the buried XNA marketplace. But the exorbitant prices destroy the interest of all but a few while creating a barrier to entry.

Non-free gaming would turn the Zune game environment into something much closer to a cell phone: a platform where games are developed for those who don't exercise discretion when they click Buy.

Perhaps. Luckily, I am not in much need of money right now, so I can definitely manage without it. I never expected to get paid anyways. Getting more experience in programming is a much more valuable payment than what can probably be expected from this hypothetical Zune marketplace. I plan on programming games as a career (I am currently taking Game Development at my university), so I need all the practice I can get.
