Default [In Progress] Asteroids


Game has been released:

I just started this game, the classic arcade game Asteroids. I will give updates as I work on the game.

Updates:
Background screen and menu screen - Completed
Aquired Images - thx YourSavior!!!
Gameplay is working, a few tweaks left

Need: (For those who want to help with the developement)
Image for explosion (if not found, I will generate one using lines)

Screenshots:



I hope to have an update every few days, something major. If the images above can be pmed to me, or links posted here, it would facilitate the developement.

I wrote an asteroids game in Java and for about a week tried to get it to the Zune. After about a week I realized that I didn't know enough about 2D animation to be able to make a good game.

I'm glad you're doing it though, should be a fun game

Ty for the support. like I said, the images would be key.

Im not creative or anything, or have enough time to look for them. So please help me, and find them. You may have to create them, especially the title.

If you want images, post in the GFX Request forum, also I recommend Stkr to do them. He is very very helpfull.

Im sorry we are not all as talaneted as mr. 9 posts...Dont complain if ur not contributing.

Its not really necessary to formally ask for graphics. If anybody can find a screenshot of asteroids, and crop them out. that would do as well.

Don't underestimate the usage of lines on the Zune! XNA has no built in DrawLine function or anything. You could, of course use the library that was announced at Ziggyware but still you need some maths do make it look like an explosion. It is way easier to use spritesheets (once someone made them).

So azngothacked, if you feel soooo bad about line explosions, please show us that you can do better... we will all appreciate a game you made with stunning effects and such. If you can't do that, just shut up!

If the whole game is using a "Vector-graphics-style" then lines would be ok, you should just not mix realistic sprites with vector-graphics. I don't think that it will look ok.

If you want to use the explosions-spritesheets I made for Running Man, feel free to use them (I give you permission hereby )

Would a ship like this work?



I can change the palette, lighting, etc. to make it work if you don't like it.

wow! Thanks for all the replies.

For the images, I was going for classic ones, but thx for the help @yoursavior. Because I will be using classic images, I figured the lines for explosions would look fine, all minimalist black and white.

@dinogames ty for your premission. Ill let u know if I end up using them.

Im gonna make some placeholder images in paint, yea i said it, MS PAINT! You can see, im no talented drawer. When someone can find or rrecreate the triangle ship, or the crater asteroids, let me know.

Just made the original one...



From the 5 minutes of research I've done on the actual asteroids, they seem to be randomly generated, as they all look different. I could make a couple different variations if you want.

I can create a triangle ship in about 30 seconds... It will just look like a plain triangle though. I'm not too good with graphics.

@yoursavior thx for the help. Ill clarify what I want. You almost have it but:

The images need to be transparent in the center of them, and cropped very tightly.

thx again for your help, and offering to make the asteroids. As for now, Can you make 1 variant, and ill scale it as I see fit, and if I get more involved, ill rotate them, to give illusion of different asteroids.

I cant wait!

Transparent ship. Also, it'll look better on the black background, because the anti-ailiasing is meant to be on black.



EDIT: Here's what the asteroid will look like in-game...

@yoursavior thx for ur help again. XNA cant use gif, so I converted to png. The last thing I need is a bullet image, just a circle, but nonetheless needed.

Ill get back to u when I see how they look in game. thx again

EDIT:They look FANTASTIC!!!!! I was able to scale the ship to 1/3 its original size, and it looks great. I am implimenting the asteroids now, I forsee good news!
