The Zune doesn't have a good graphics chip so the 3D gaming area is greatly limited in the 3D realm. Doom-style 3D is about as far as it'll get.

The Zune doesn't have any graphics chip. There is just one, lonely processor in there that does everything.

Anyway, I'm completely rewriting the engine (I found a nice tutorial explaining raycasting), so it will be faster and easier to use. Once that's done I'll try and post up some new videos from the game.

The way this shooter is rendered is by faking the 3D. It's all just 2D rendered stuff that is scaled and positioned to look 3D. But there is no actual 3D involved. Hence why it doesn't run as fast and doesn't allow for much.

So, can you move your self or is your movement path predetermined?

Yes, you can move wherever you want. It's just like how they did things for Wolfenstein 3D back in the day (for those who are old enough to have played it :p): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfenstein_3D

Is this going to be only for touch pad? I definitely hope not. But if it is, i'm planning on getting an 8 in the near future anyways...

Playing a game like this without a ZunePad will be a bit hard. Still awesome for the consideration for those who haven't decided to switch over just yet.

Actually the DPad has a distinct advantage of being easier to move at maximum speed whereas you are rarely ever going to be able to put your finger at the absolute very top of the ZunePad to run forward. Not to mention that to turn quickly with a ZunePad you must stop moving (since it's just a thumbstick), whereas the 30GB people can hold up and right simultaneously (though granted then they will have a hard time firing ). So actually the DPad is pretty much superior in this game. And since the 30GB DPad is better than the 4/8/80 DPad, they kind of win.

Alright. Just finished fixing a bug in my texturing code so here's the first glimpse of the new engine running at 3000 fps on my PC .

Also, let it start playing a bit, and then scrub back to the beginning. Then it will display as it should (i.e. a little column in the middle instead of stretched to the sides).

Wow, that looks amazing, whats the fps like on the zune? And are you going to be sharing the skeleton of your improved engine for other people to use?

Can we get a link to this tutorial?

Is it actually ray-casting (are you shooting 240 x 320 rays?), is this a software renderer, Or is it a hybrid where you shoot less rays since you can only move/look on 1 plane?

Raycasting is where you only move on 1 plane. Shooting 240x320 rays would be raytracing. That's the difference. And the tutorial is found on this page: http://student.kuleuven.be/~m0216922/CG/.

Performance on the Zune is around 30-32fps (doesn't matter which render method is used). I'm working on floors and ceilings and it seems that might be harder to implement in a real efficient way. I'm going to try a few tricks otherwise I might just pass and move on to the items and characters. Then the enemy AI and the rest of the game logic .

I'm not sure if I'll release my code yet or not.
