Well if you were to read the full line it says:
Quote:
2D/3D graphics acceleration with open GL support (Not in L version)
The zune has the Freescale iMX31L processor which is the L version that they speak of.

There is no graphics accellerator in the Zune, so no 3D games. Period. This is coming directly from the XNA team, so it is an accepted fact.

That sneak peak thing is not a zune thing, it's an XNA thing.

I just hope they give us games in a reasonable amount of time.

Not the racing game? The zune doesn't allow 3D.

And the games will come plenty fast for the zune.

You will be able to make imitation 3d games but it will be
a) hard to code(for big games, its easy if you just wanna show a spinning square or something)
b) use up more RAM which you only have 16mb to begin with

So it will be pretty useless to make them unless you just wanna make a certain shape spin then you can just make images of a 3d cube that turns or flips or something, and then with the XNA programming import the pics into your project, code to load them into RAM on the zune and just loop the pictures and have a certain button exit.

Games that arent 3d are still going to be good, check out flash games (in essence thats the kind of games people will make) there is only a couple 3d flash games and everything else is 2d and their interesting/fun anyway.

That has got to be the worst way to make a 3d cube without 3d rendering I have ever heard.

Well, I wrote a small software renderer. 3D is possible on Zune although it's pretty slow (I have about 100 Gouraud shaded polygons on the screen with no zbuffer implemented yet and I'm down to 18FPS rendering scene fullscreen). So it is doable with some hacks and e.g. 2D scrolling background. Drawing flat shaded objects can be achieved in solid 25FPS though. Shading and texturing is hard since you have to interpolate values yourself and that gets pretty expensive.

Actual the zune can play 3d graphics. The zune team created a game the first day xna 3.0 came out. It was a 8 player 3D first person shooter. The 3D graphics were all software rendered. Your right that the zune cannot accelerate the 3D... but it can be done with software

that may or may not be true, but with the limited power of the Zune CPU, it would be laggy as can be. The zune just doesn't have the power to pull of a good software rendered 3d model.

What do you expect? It's a media player, not a PSP.

3D games were around before there were dedicated 3D processors. Maybe someone will be able to throw together a ray-casting engine. I have a ray-casting based 3D game on my calculator, I'm sure the zune can handle it.

I understand that ray-casting isn't the "3D graphics" you speak of but its a step above any of the current zune games available I'm a C++ programmer and very much dislike C# or else I would do it myself.

Highly reduced ray casting though, the graphics would be pretty garbage, below Wolfenstein 3D engine quality.
