Angry dissapointed

I recently purchased a Zune, convinced that it would be recognized as removable media by windows (as most anyone would expect). Now turns out it just doesn't work with windows explorer. Nothing but a worthless piece of crap... very dissapointing for a product bearing the Microsoft name. I'm returning it tomorrow...

There is a simple hack that allows you to use it as an external hard drive.

yeah when I first heard of it I wanted it to be like that too.

but w/e... microsoft wanted to make an itunes competitor.

I thought at least they could make it work with wmp, but nope... I assume the reason behind that is drm... since wmp uses urge...

anyway if you don't mind having only up to 4 gigs of media get a psp, you don't have to sync that with any kind of software... just use windows explorer.

I'd get a psp if it had a 30 gig hard drive.

I tried the hack already, it didn't work for me. Keeps saying I don't have permission to copy files. I really appreciate all your help, but I still feel it's irritating the fact that us users are still expected to deal with "hacks", instead of bringing us the complete product from the start.

I do intend to listen to music too... but even in that regard, the Zune seems to be anything but practical... plus I don't see the point of having to keep a duplicate of whatever I want in the Zune stored also in my PC. That is simply ridiculous.

x2

The hack isn't that hard and you can just use it as an external hard drive for what you need

The hack is very simple and if done right there is no reason for it not to work
The only reason why i think it wouldnt work is because you did somthing wrong

To add files to your zune, you have to start a sync with your zune program. While it is syncing, you can add files to your zune. It may sound like a lot of work at first, but it is not a really big deal if you think abouut it. Microsoft has also said that they plan to add in use as an external hard drive in the future.

I still don't see the point of making the zune player not work as what it basically is: an external drive
...that's all I'm saying... why do they have to put limitations to the technology that's already there?

Saying the hack works or doesn't still seems to be subjective. To be more specific, it made the Zune show up as a device on "my computer", but when I tried to copy anything from the PC to the Zune I always got a "permission denied" sort of error.

For Microsoft to say now they will come up with a patch so that their own OS can recognize their product is just like admitting it's a flawed design, and by the time they fix it, the Zune most probably will have lost many adepts. But it's not really like I have something against Microsoft... on the contrary, I wish we could all help them do better, that's all.

i dont think that it is a flawed design . . . they made it that way . . . it appears as portable device rather than a usb massive storage device . . . by limiting the access of the harddrive it makes it less vulnerable to viruses . . .

Did you try to put your files in while the zune was synchronizing with your computer?

Iwillgetazunesometime, I read it on some other website, I can not really remember the site. It may have been fake it may have not been. It does seem like a logical step that Microsoft would take though, so it is all just speculation until they say something.

To be honest, I tried to copy some media files between the Zune and the PC while the Zune application was running, but I'm not sure it was syncing at all... call me dumb, but I find the synchronization method a bit too unfamiliar, specially taking into account how easy it is to use a pen drive these days. To mention just one example, even the smaller Sandisk players let the user choose the method he prefers, so why couldn't the Zune?
