Default Gapless Playback?

I'm surprised to find that there isn't much of a desire for gapless playback based on what I've found posted around in these forums. More people seem to want a clock. Obviously the two features are very different, and one would be harder to implement than the other. Here are some albums that I've gathered that would benefit from gapless playback.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
The Beatles - Abbey Road
The Beatles - White Album
Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons
Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed
The Who - Tommy
Yes - Fragile
Mars Volta - De-loused
Mars Volta - Francis The Mute
Greenday - American Idiot
Gorillaz - Demon Days
My Bloody Valentine- Loveless
Radiohead - OK Computer
Radiohead - Kid A
Tool - Lateralus
NIN - The Downward Spiral
Metallica - S&M
Muse - Absolution

Apple released gapless playback for their 5.5G iPod back in September of last year so why shouldn't the Zune have it now?

I realize that this feature will *possibly* be implemented someday. Right now, all I'm doing is simply bringing more attention to this missing feature.

There IS a big desire for gapless playback, it's that Microsoft doesn't want to get on their ass and release a firmware. All it takes is a minute or two to fix the problem and release it to the public. A clock isn't that hard either.

Is gapless playback moving from one song to another without it stopping to go to the next track? Seems kind of obvious, but I'm not certain. I would like to set a 3 or 4 second cross fader, like on WMP. I wonder if that would be in the same realm for a firmware update.

WMP is gapless, my friend.

I was blasting some albums today and there was no gaps between each song. Maybe a crossfade (didn't notice).

Yer gapless playback would be good, with crossfade options too, so it could be adjusted in settings would be nice. Come on Microsoft, get ur ASS in gear.

We need gapless yes, but people want a clock, why you ask? The answer to that escapes my understanding

WMP is gapless in the Zune itself or in the software?

Back in the day when I had an iRiver H320, I used to be a misticriver.net regular. It was a place much like this one where people would discuss their digital audio players. Various sources were always saying that with the next firmware update we would finally be getting native gapless support. A year and half and three firmware updates came and gapless never came. Then along came Rockbox, an open sourced firmware that brought us crossfading, gapless playback, a parametric EQ, games, OGG MPC FLAC WV playback and the list went on.

My fear is that either Microsoft will never implement gapless playback, or, if they do it'll only be for their own codec (wma) that most of us don't even use in the first place and have no desire to use.

Wrong. Gapless playback requires reprogramming of the firmware utilization of the mp3/wma decoder dlls. It would require much more than a few minutes I can assure you.

There IS gapless playback in WMP and Zune software, not the zune itself.

Thanks for correcting me Marshii, didn't know that!!

Anyway, Microsoft needs to know that most people who buy zune's are advanced listeners/users and they shouldn't single us out. They should give us the advanced features that put us ahead of the Apple iPod.

I would love cross-fade and auto-leveling (some of the tracks play really quite).

I always use WMP to play my music. Zune player away from my computer....

I listen to a lot of drum and bass and having gapless would rock. Transitions are my favorite and right when it gets built up to the next track ___________

Would love to see this in the next firmware. Screw clock I have 20 other devices that have clocks on them
