With Microsoft reporting a $289 million loss on the Zune are we pretty much screwed on any decent updates?
It seems like to me that they will just abort the first one and try to push second generation Zune's with features that we won't have. It's kind of alarming anyway. |

When I bought the Zune, they've promised new features via Firmware. There is no doubt that Microsoft will be adding them.

It not $289 million lose on the Zune its $289 million total loss for microsoft's entertainment division. This includes the Zune Yes, but not caused completely by the Zune. The Xbox 360 with the developmnnt of its servers and networks are the main causes as Microsoft are just starting to make money upon each console sold, they were in fact lossing money (same as the PS3) on each unit sold through all of 2005 and most of 06.
Yes: Zune has not yet had any profit for Microsoft and is infact causing the loss of income for Microsoft. But overall its not $289 million (not even close) and this figure is in fact for all of Microsoft's entertainment division. |

Yeah.
I Agree. If this is off the thing I posted. Then yeah. I Got a zune in Promises that these would have firmware updates and constantly improving the item, because thats what made it so special aside from the iPod. If i would have known that it was going to backfire possibly. I would have just got an iPod video. I too will be demanding to trade my 1.0 Zune in if they push out a 2.0 Zune 30GB this year or next year, and do nothing for ours. Freakin messed up man

That's not entirely true. The PSP is a handheld system that has vast amounts of untapped potential, official or otherwise. Yet, the DS is dominating sales across the entire global scale. Just because a system is technically superior (with potential or otherwise) does not mean it will sell. I like the zune anyway

But you have to think here, Microsoft didn't do this to make money... they almost never do anymore. The did this to stay a part of the competition. Think about it. They did this for the Xbox (to compete with the PS2, N64, etc...) and they are working on a hand held now (PSP, DS, etc...) Microsoft does not need to make money, they want to show that they can stay in the competition. "Fiscal '07 will be a loss. We think that turns to profit in '08," - Robbie Bach (president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division).

The release of the Wii and PS3 probably hurt them somewhat. But, you have to remember when the xbox came out it was a money sink, and eventually it turned into profits. Microsoft does not really have much of a history of abandoning its products (at least to my knowledge). I like what you said Robb. They are Microsoft they poop money, they see the MP3 and hand-held video industry as a booming industry and they want in. Even if it means they start with a few petty losses =P
My 2 cents. |
