The Supposed "Leaked Video of Zune Linux" -- Biggest Hoax of 2007

Recently, a video of the Zune running "Linux" was posted. I doubt it was real linux, but I am sure it wasn't leaked by Mys Videl. The facts just don't add up.


1. The YouTube Post

According to the user "ZuneSceneExlusive" from YouTube.com, this video was leaked by Mys Videl. Here is the direct quote:

MysVidel from ZuneBoards.com leaked diz video 2 me... i hope he dusn't get too mad at me :P

Mys Videl would never leak any kind of secret info to an overly eager 12 year old who can not spell. She also would never leak it to someone she did not trust. If she had trusted him, he would've known that Mys Videl is a SHE not a HE.


2. The ZuneScene Post

If I remember correctly, this video was first posted at ZuneScene.com. In case you haven't known, Mys Videl is an admin from ZuneBoards.com... Now why the hell would she post the video at ZuneScene and not at ZuneBoards? Also, according to one of the admins at ZuneScene, the user who posted the video had the email address of "Mys.Videl@gmail.com." I'll let you know right now, that she does not have an email called "Mys.Videl@gmail.com." In fact, her email address doesn't relate to her username at all.

3. The Video Itself

I'll keep this one nice and short. Mys Videl does not own a camera. You would know this if you had been a member here long enough.

4. Zune Linux

All Mys Videl does for the Zune Linux is some heavy duty debugging. She does no programming. The programming part is up to her friends, who are also working on the Zune Linux. So please, stop bothering her about it. The Zune Linux will come someday, just please be patient. The ipod wasn't hacked in the first few months that it came out.



So who was it? Probably some prankster trying to screw her over.

I know I have posted this twice already, but I think I know how they did it. No fancy video editing, nothing like that at all. If I were to do something like this, I would simply take a video capture of my pc booting linux in the zune dimensions, convert it to .wmv and sync it to my zune. After that, all that needs to be done is pressing play.

All you need is a video of some blurry text and a penguin in 320x240 .wmv, put it on your Zune, and Voiala. Seriously, intentional misspellings, factual errors and fake leaks get on my nerves.

i dont know MysVidel, but can believe that some people thought that was real...or hoped it was real.

if i found out it was running linux....you think i would use a blurry camera and only 15 seconds of film. NO and would show the whole thing and maybe a walk through of how i did it...

I wouldn't call it the biggest hoax of 2007. Most people didn't buy into it anyway. It wasn't even a very good hoax if you could even call it one.

You know, even though I as well as the majority of the Zune community consider this release to be a fake for numerous reasons, it would be nice if we were given some insight into how the Zune Linux scene is progressing. Obviously people are extremely interested... look how much talk this stupid video generated; I mean, even when hacks such as the Xbox 360 were being developed the programmers were supplying updates (via posts/blogs) and screens of their work. If we had that at least, then we would know that something like this fake video is in fact fake because we would know where the programmers really are on getting this distro up and running.

Personally, I'm more interested in running Zune on Linux then running Linux on Zune, but I'm hoping the two will go hand in hand. So, anyone willing to give an update?

As far as I know Mys Videl has the only information and she told me that she can't release it right now beacuse it is untested and at this point still needs clean enviroment? What does all this mean? No clue. But little hints like that let me know she has gotten somewhere.

That's what I'm thinking.... I mean PhunkMaster you're a staffer here and even you can't make heads from tails about the progress of this project. Now, don't get me wrong here, I'm only a blogger and am not trying to flame anyone, but rather just obtain a clear & clean assessment of the situation. So, the questions arise: who are her 'friends'? where are her 'friends'? and why haven't we heard from her 'friends'? Without direct answers to these questions, along with some possible screenshots or progress reports, I'm a tad bit skeptical to say the least.....

Clock
Clearer Radio
Faster Software Converting
etc

Before a Linux upgrade.

Nope. Not me or my friends anyway. We all use our cellphones.. And just like the Zune, Cellphones don't Need Clocks, but its a nice feature to have when you need to know the time.
