I just got offered a job with Symantec for about $10k more a year. I'm pretty stoked about it but I always hate quiting a job that hasn't really done me wrong. The other thing that sucks is that the job I work now is for the Government which gives me a slew of benefits that the private sector just can't compete with. But $10k more a year is a lot of money plus I get stock options in the company and a sh*t load of free Symantec/Norton software/hardware and they are going to pay for me to get some more certifications. I've pretty much made up my mind but I'm curious as to what you guys would do in the same situation.

Well, how are the benefits with Symantec? If they're not too bad, I'd say go for it.

If it were myself, I would be tempted to stay with the government for Job security. But I don't see Symantec closing it's door's anytime soon. This article from April doesn't make them look to great.

That's a pretty tough decision. I myself hate Norton virus scanner because it is a load of crap, but the $10K more a year is great. But think about this: Do the benefits of your government job make up for $10K less a year?

Norton's antivirus software aside, Symantec makes plenty of good software products. My favorite is Ghost because it is just an awesome back up suite.
Well, do up a rough calculation of Pros and Cons with both in particular look at how the lost of benefits from going Government to Private Sector will effect expenses. What will you have to pay for with the loss of those benefits and do a rough guesstimate on will that $10k cover it and give you more headroom. Also, don't forget to factor in the certifications and what kind of impact they will have on your future career.

I've pretty much made up my mind that I'm going to take the job but there is still this small part of me that says not to. I think it just comes back to the fact that I'll feel like I'm f*cking everyone that I currently work with (figuratively).
The biggest thing that i see though is that Juniper systems is on the rise in the enterprise/corporate environment and Symantec just recently acquired them. I'm thinking about the opportunity that may provide me. Not to mention that if they are going to pay for me to get more certifications in anything that is related to my job that opens up a lot of opportunities. I mean, if I can get them to pay for my CCNP... just having that CCNP cert is a guaranteed $20k more with any job. I really just wanted to see if you guys would come up with anything that I may not have thought of yet before I just decided to jump for the $. I appreciate it guys!

I'd go for it simply because they will pay for certifications and such. So, get as much as you can from that. Then if they happen to lay you off for any reason you at least have even stronger credentials that will help you find another job.
