Default Friend issues.

So I just found out today that my best friend hasn't passed a grade since 4th grade. He says that he can't pay attention at school and has been dropping classes for a long time. His mom is too busy to do anything about it, since his dad is gone now. I really want the best for him, and for him not to grow up dependent on his family for financial support. What do I do?

Wait, so he's still in fourth grade?

Make him ask him mom to get him test for ADD or something. That's the only thing I can think of really.

Well, I talked to him and cognitively speaking, he can do 8th grade math. So apparently he's not that far behind.

wow man, I've never really heard of a case where someone knows about the problem, but doesn't do anything about it, you SHOULD slap his mom, but for now, take these guys' advice, and just hang out with him and try to let him know that you're there for him, chances are he's more scared than you.

truthfully, all you can really do is be supportive of him. if he needs help, give it to him.
he needs to want to help himself. i can understand you wanting to be a friend and help, because that is what friends are for, but some things are just hard to do.

Yeah, don't let him take responsibility for himself, since you know, it's only his life he's messing up by being lazy. Let's just blame something else so everyone will feel sorry for him.

And if you want to flame me for saying this, I think if you go to the elementary school anywhere, about 30% of the kids have ADD, they're just fat and lazy. It's a person's diet that can alter how they pay attention. If you have a diet full of fat and grease it does things to your body and mind. Which a lot of parents nowadays just go buy some McDonalds for their kids, instead of making them eat better. Oh but wait, I think a Big Mac has all of the groups of the food group. Correct me if I'm wrong.

i dont think thats true there are some ppl who do not eat healthy but still manage it might not be add it just lack of support and just seeing that his parent dont care about him how can he not think that he shouldnt care for himself u cant just put it on an illness or a person ther might be some self of steam issues i think u should make him feel like he is worth something to someone

Just because they don't eat healthy doesn't mean it's going to hit them in one day. It's a long-term cause and effect. It happens over time.

He has to want to help himself first, you can't do anything about it if he doesn't try to make an effort by himself.

It's sad that he does not have any support from his parents, though. It may affect him greatly, even if he doesn't show it. And that is even if he is a big kid.

Try to talk to him about it.

I agree, but only try to help him if he shows that he wants to help himself.
Cause what is the point of helping someone if they don't even care about themselves it is a waste of the op's time.

If he doesn't want to help himself, there's nothing you can do. Talking to him would be like talking to a wall. In one ear, out the other.
