Friend problem

I'm having a dilema

I have two, friends, not great friends, but the kind you eat lunch with everyday.

One is like the best friend of a close friend, we'll call her Sally
The other, we'll call him Jeff

Anyways, Jeff and Sally hate each other's guts
Sally is downright evil to Jeff, calling him 'colorful' names and flipping him off, etc.
Jeff retailates by calling her half-human, alien child, etc. Then rants and raves about her evilness

Now the only reason this is bothering me is because, as stated above, Sally is the best friend of a really close friend.

And as Sally and Jeff continue to duke it out, she gets mad at me like it's my fault. Might be because I laugh at what Jeff says, but I can't help it. I feel that this is splitting me and my close friend's friendship

What should I do?

like most people say.. always just stay out of it and don't interfare with others.. just keep on ignoring it.. unless it gets out of hand badly..

Yeah, but then I'd end up on Sally's "Must be a [blank] To" and then that would end up with me and my close friend not being friends anymore

Stay out of it. Try to minimize the time they spend with each other. And, just tell them to get it over already and hook up. Why? Because that would be hilarious.

I was joking about the last part. But if you're going to go for that then just tell them that the fact that they feel the need to explain why they wouldn't means that they just want to. Also point to Sally and tell Jeff, with Sally in earshot, to "hit that." Oh, and, if you can't tell, I'm joking. Though I personally would do that and have done stuff like that before.

I haven't had this problem exactly, but quite a few close friends of mine have hated each other with a passion. Yeah, it sucks so bad to be in the middle.

A long time ago (we're talking middle school here) I was pretty much a two-faced a**hole. I wouldn't advise getting on either side at all, because it will blow up in your face.

What has worked for me is when they start talking crap about the other one, don't let them complete a sentence- cut them off and say something to the effect of "Listen, I don't even want to hear it. I know you don't like [so-and-so], but I don't have any problems with them and I don't want any to be created." Saying that has always worked for me, even if that statement has to be repeated a couple times.

this sounds like the best thing to do, i don't know if I wuld say it in this kind of manner, but definitely say that they need to grow up and just ignore each other if they can't do anything else. I mean, what the hell?

Just tell them to stop arguing, or if you're mad, say "Shut the **** up or I'm leaving."

It's better to be on the sidelines though. If one of my friends had to pick between me and someone else, 90% chance it's the other person.
