Hello - I am new to this whole new Zune thing. I have searched the web for hacks, tips, tricks for the external hard drive.
Here is what I have:
$99 brown Zune 30 from J&R
Zune setup disk automatically installs Zune 2.0 software
HD hack patch: Used the one from popsci.com that changes the registry settings.
What works:
In "My Computer" I can see two Zune icons of the name of my Zune player. I can click on either one and I can see the "Storage" icon and enter this folder. Then I can see all of the default folders in my Zune (Music, Video, etc...). I can delete any file inside of any folder from here within the Explorer window that first started from "My Computer"
Zune 2.* software works and I can sync music and pictures within the default software. Everything looks good at this point
What does not work:
Drag and drop - First I just tried to drag and drop a file from an Explorer window spawned from "My Documents" to one of the default folders in the Zune player. This did not work.
Create Folder - Same thing, permissions problem with the folders located on the Zune player prevent folder creation.
Note: Then I found out that you only have write permissions to your Zune when the Zune software is syncing with the player. I tried the following tricks to gain write access to the Zune:
* Opened the Task Manager - found zune.exe running, started a file transfer of a photo album within the Zune software and then killed zune.exe before the transfer was finished. Write access was still locked.
* In another web find, someone indicated that you must let a file transfer complete, leave the Zune software running, and you will have write access via the Explorer window. Did not work.
Bottom line:
If there are flaws in my process, please help me. Also, is it true that everything got disabled after the recent release of the Zune 2.* software? If so, are there any new work arounds?
Thanks,
rob
