This works for video and pictures, and any non DRM music. However, if your music has DRM on it, then you will have the file, but you won't be able to listen to it because you won't have the license to play it. Personally, I do this with a combination of backing up and restoring my DRM folder. (its a hidden system folder that contains all the DRM information) That way, I can restore the music in the way listed above, and then restore the DRM folder, which gives me the license to play the DRM content.
