these added features, if available in future models of the zune could lead to taking a big chunk out of the ipod sales, leading ipod to step up their game, then the zune would counter. competition makes for good better pricing for us and better features. but with what i read about 1mil iphones to be sold close to their debut date, and it took the zune over 6months to sell that many players, well time will tell.

You can't really compare iphone to zune, 2 very different products. When 4G comes out iphone will look like a joke. Everyone is just jumping on it (like a few people I work with. damn apple lovers) because it is made by apple. god, apple just makes me want to puke.
Of course it will take time for microsoft to compete with ipod. Microsoft has the misfortune of having the new product. People aren't going to just go out and buy one if they have an ipod in general working order. It is going to take some time (but not too long

)for people's ipods to wear out to a point where they will have to replace. That is the target market for zune.
Microsoft would have to come out with something so killer to make people discard their perfectly good ipod or other device. This would be internet, xbox integration, apps and plugins and who knows what else can work with the hardware. Zune looks to have a lot more expandability (ie. WiFi) than the average ipod on the market today.
Remember that if microsoft went out and released new firmware that unlocked everything in the system tomorrow, then what would there be to look forward in the future? The more releases they put out, the more press they get and that is what they want. Marketing/advertising just works that way sadly
