1) only 1.3 billion people, far from that 2 billion you posted
2) it's not a poor country. hong kong (which belongs to china) is the free-est and best place to do business and trade region in the world (according to international rankings last year)
3) Since components are MADE in china and taiwan mostly, chinese can get things at far cheaper prices than americans can (except ipods for some reason). An example would be that 100GB toshiba drive to mod the zune 30 with. It's sold here for at least $130 but over there, i've seen it for about $80 new.
4) Just to give an idea of technology penetration in China, in 2006, according to forbes, china surpassed the US in internet use. Mobile cell usage is also ranked #1 at 300 million subscribers.
These are just a few facts to set you straight. Let's not even discuss the profits GM, VW, Ford, BMW, etc. all the car companies are making over there (despite losses in the US), or the fact that China holds approximately 24% (according to wikipedia) of the US debt.
The western portrayal of Chinese being "poor" is because the US is so focused on human rights, etc., thus, with the exponentially growing middle class but widening of the peasantry class vs elite class (poor getting poorer, rich getting richer), it is much easier now for media to focus fire on China's shortcomings.
