A Home Surround sound is usually comprised of a receiver which pulls the audio from a the red, and white,(RCA, Composite) audio cables. but because your computer doesn't know the difference between digital surround sound and standard, it uses multiple audio cables to separate the sound into surround sound components through the sub.
