I think the main reason it's asked, is because age has a big part in how much time you'll have, and how much effort you'll most likely end up committing.

Age, no matter the person, is a bearing on maturity, and the ability to understand certain things, concepts and processes. The brain doesn't even finish developing until the early 20's, so being 14 and being 19 may seem like only 5 years, but it can be a world of difference.

Also, the idea of asking someone to attest to their own maturity is just plain silly.
