The G5 Processor was the first processor with a 64-Bit architecture and was benchmarked to be superior to the P4 and at that time Apple was selling towers with Dual G5's. Though for a year Apple had been planning the Intel switch and months before deadline released PC's with Core 2 Duo processors - Not Pentium 4's. They did release a Mini with an "Intel Core Solo" but that would be catagorized as a "Celeron".
