The lack of an EQ just effects the tweakablity of the audio, it only means you need to get earphones that have good synergy with the sound signature of the Zune, it doesn't mean the sound quality isn't relaitvely high. Many audiophiles would say that no DAP has audiophile quality sound (except an iMod paired with a high quality amp), but in relative terms, the Zune 80 is one of the better sounding players on the market in my opinion, and the benefits of higher quality earphones can certainly be heard.
