They are powerup's. Each level depending on progression will contain a certain percentage of powerup's for things like the laser paddle (shown in the video), Elongated paddle, Tiny Paddle, multi-ball, and sticky paddle to name a few of the traditional powerup's supported currently by the game.
There are a number of game play elements that are not present in the video and the idea has been bounced around on how projectiles (there are others) effect the ball as well as bricks. Now that I know there is some outside interest in such an element we can see what happens.
