I don't know if you can compare the two (xbox 360 and Zune). Yes they are both Microsoft products, but they are vastly different. One is a portable media device which is prone to drops, dying batteries, and other problems. The other is a mostly stationary gaming device that would rarely be moved and has no battery.
The xbox 360 has experienced well documented quality control issues. That is the primary reason for MS extending the manufacturer's warranty on it.
The Zune, from what I can tell, has had no such issues. Sure, there may be RMA's (Return Merchandise Authorization) but not at NEAR the rate of the 360. In your case, maybe it was a bad shipment that came to the store, who knows.
I've only had mine for a month, but it is working great so far. I go for flash devices to not have to worry about moving parts and shock.
