Definition of hard reset: to reset a piece of a group of hardware
Definition of soft reset: to reset a piece of a group of software

So by draining the battery, the hardware in the zune will reset.
So by reloading the firmware, the software or the OS of in the zune will reset or replaced.

Draining the battery method of resetting the hardware should be called hard reset and your method of reloading the firmware should be soft reset. The two method combined should be called full reset.

Edit: I didn't say draining the zune's battery is called hard reset. The result of draining the battery (clearing the values of the hardware) is suppose to be called hard reset hense the name "Hard (hardware) reset"
