Mac Site Says Zune to Outdo iPod

Boy, you don’t see this everyday!  A surprising article came out on AppleMatters.com in which Tanner Godarzi boldly makes the statement “Why The Zune Will Outdo The iPod,” and is ticking off a ton of iFanbois.  Godarzi makes some interesting observations; the most prominent is that the Zune is simply consumer friendly hardware.

zunefam

He goes on to point out, while the iPod may be better in terms of design and capabilities, the latest Zune generation is an example of how a product should be made in terms of support.  Apple locks consumers into a “walled off garden” where older iPods are forgotten, and Apple would rather you buy newer versions to increase sales.  In contrast, Godarzi applauds Microsoft for giving existing Zune owners access to new features that will be released with the newer devices via firmware and software updates.

And while Godarzi admits the Zune will not take over the iPod right now, he says Microsoft is positioning itself very well to take in burned iPod owners who are tired of Apple’s increasingly locked and proprietary platform.  He sees Microsoft taking a different approach with the Zune having as much compatibility as possible with many other things (i.e. Xbox, Windows Media Center, ZuneSocial).

Godarzi ends by stating if Apple continues down the path their heading in, Microsoft will slaughter them!

Wow! Once again, Microsoft dominates the consumer's market. I'm glad that Microsoft will update our 1st Gen Zunes, instead of being forced to buy new ones completely! Microsoft really knows what pleases customers, not by looks or size, but capabilites and service! YAY MICROSOFT

OK, the zune 30 is great i have one. But i dont use it because the screen broke. I got an ipod touch and am much more pleased with the amount of content is on itunes. Apple will stay ahead of the pack for at least the next 5 to 10 years. Creative has a better chance than MICROSOFT. And wow its the second gen zune, but the technolegy is there to make it a ton better, there holding back or they dont have a clue what everyone wants.

Your hilarious. You say the technology is there, and thats why Microsoft is doing it. Since thats true, why isnt apple doing it too? I also think its funny that you come to a Zune site to say that Creative has a better shot than MS. And Apple lead the pack for 5-10 years? People are going to be tired of Apple forcing users to buy the new iPod every 2 months for a cool new feature. I don't even know what your talking about.

well, the ipod classic did not put much new to the table except for a bigger hdd and new interface. oh and removal of the glossy front. zune is at least bringing new stuff to the mp3 player market.

Well, and not to mention that the ipod classic is a slow pig. It runs awfully choppy when i play with one at the store...I wonder how it will be when I do drop my 80+ gigs of music on there. No thanks.

Since I bought my zune, it's been filled to it's brim and never ran choppy for me.

Plus, I've never had an ipod that's lasted this long.
I don't think Zune will slaughter the Ipods. I think they'll continue to steal away customers like they've been doing...but the thing with mac is that it's a trendy company.

Well, I am both a Zune owner (bought it in June) and iPod Touch 16 GB(Bought it last week). I must admit that having a tiny internet appliance plus a music player/video player all in one device was what made me go over to the "dark side". That said, I'm reluctant to sell my Zune. I just couldn't wait until Zune does internet. If it ever does, then I'll dump the ipod.

Apple products are overpriced. Period. Obviously Stevie boy knows how to 'milk the cow till its dry'. Look how much the iphone dropped after the initial hysteria died. And I can't see Stevie loosing any more money by dropping the price by $200 bucks unless somehow they got AT&T to fork over the difference so that they can get more subscribers.

I'm not an early adopter anyway. I go for value (meaning I'm cheap, I'll admit it). Got my Zune from Woot for $155 shipped in Aug and another Zune from AMZN for $99.99 shipped. Either way, its still way cheaper than ipods. And I love my Zune. Got my silicon cases here at Zuneboards.com as well for $13.50 shipped. thats life baby!! why should Stevie get my hard earned money?

I'm not sure why Ipod users come on the Zune boards to bash the Zune. Those of you who do this must not have any life. I think the Zune is great; the value, screen size and storage space was what attracted me to it. Plus, some of my family have Ipods and I'm not a fan of the touch sensitive scroll. Don't get me wrong the Ipod is visually nice. But, I still like my Zune. If the Zune Marketplace would add movies, videos and podcasts plus add more music I would be happy.

I just won a Zune and I was pretty excited about it. I read the box and it said it required Windows XP. That was pretty disappointing. A coworker of mine has one, and I really liked the 3" screen. I was hoping to use MTP to connect it to one of my workstations, but apparently Microsoft obfuscated the protocol so that it does not work outside of their Windows-only music management software. How awful. I don't feel like waiting for someone to crack the protocol, so I guess I need to sell/return it.
