The number of complaints of the Zune shutting down without warning has been growing in many forums, including our own forum , Zunerama , and even ClicZune. According to many readers from Zunerama, ClicZune, and other forums, the cause of the shut down is because the Zune is sensitive to static electricity. Southpaw from Cliczune suggested: “The
static is actually an autokillswitch thing. I've had it happen and
replicated the issue to test it(much to the pain of my ear). It's made
so that if an electrical signal returns back through the headphones to
the audio in it'll shut down to prevent itself from getting damaged.”
When the Zune shuts down, it completely shuts off. You have to wait anywhere from 15-90 seconds for the Zune to reboot itself. You will see the Zune Logo, like you would when you reset your Zune.
This has happened to me many times before. In fact, the last time my Zune shut down on me was this morning. It was outside around 12 degrees fahrenheit. The air was very dry and cold. Perfect conditions for static electricity. My best advice to prevent this, is getting a rubber/silicone case. Although I can't guarantee it will eliminate the problem, but it should help a bit-- if the whole static electricity thing is true.
