How To: Downgrade Software and Firmware
User Rating: / 28

Thursday, 15 November 2007

If you are someone who hates the new software with a passion, or someone Microsoft screwed over by taking away the Asian Character Hack, this is for you! However, there are things you must sacrifice, like the ability to sync over WiFi, and podcasts. Let's get started now, shall we?

To downgrade the Zune Desktop Software:

1. System Restore to the point right before 2.0 was installed.

if that is not possible, then:

01.Uninstall

02.Disconnect your computer from the internet.

03.Install 1.1 (or 1.0) from the original CD.!

NOTE: In either case, it is best to wipe out the Zune's database and allow it to rebuild. There was some quirkiness after the restore because the System Restore didn't fully restore the Zune's database. Deleting the files in:
"C:\Documents and Settings\< user >\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Zune" did the trick.

Before you start the rest, you'll need 3 files:

Zune.RE.zip
Zune Firmware 1.4
Java Runtime 6

WARNING! This will delete all content on your Zune. Make sure to backup your content!

01.Create a temp directory: C:\temp

02.Place firmware 1.4 into the temp directory.

03.Rename the firmware file to: Zune01050485.cab

04.Place the ZuneFirm.jar file from Zune.RE.zip into the temp directory.

05.Start -> run... -> cmd

06.c: [ enter ]

07.cd /temp [ enter ]

08.java -jar ZuneFirm.jar [ enter ]

09.Go to your network setting, open up TCP/IP and change your DNS to 165.132.120.124. Then in another cmd, ping go.microsoft.com to check if it's directed to yourself (127.0.0.1). NOTE: if you cannot ping go.microsoft.com successfully and you are using a router, then connect your computer directly to your cable modem. This is the crucial step... if you cannot get a ping of go.microsoft.com to return 127.0.0.1 then do not proceed until you can!

If you are trying to add Asian Character support again, you must include the asian fonts in the firmware. More information can be found here .

Thanks  sracer at ZS!

Nice job getting this up so fast, should come in handy.

Off-topic, but has anyone figured out how to fix the metadata that the new software massacred? I've got Scott Joplin and G. F. Handel in the same album! Help!

Can anyone confirm that the firmware v1.4 has the proper various artists support? i.e. When you play an album by multiple artists it doesn't just say 'Various Artists' as the artist name, it actually puts the correct artist?

If so.. I'll probably downgrade till this is fixed.
1031982   | 76.209.55.xxx | 2007-11-15 12:32:07
I get the feeling MS is going to fix as much as possable as fast as possable. It was a BIG jump going from a porn of WMP to another stand alone program, and the firmware is a big improvement.
jaybee   | 209.104.229.xxx | 2007-11-15 14:23:31
I think people are jumpin the gun...I know it sucks that songs are messed up and that you don't have Asian characters, but if you can read English let it ride for a little and someone will hook up the hack and the fix for the albums...it will be OK...

I can't install Zune 1.x software on my computer because it keeps wanted to be connected to the internet to install, thus it updates, how do I get around this?

I tried downgrading my software, first I uninstalled the Zune 2 software, then I disconnected from the internet, then when I put the CD in and start setup, it says that this version of Zune software isn't supported by Windows Vista. then I connected my internet back and tried running the installer again, it just updated to the new software. Any way to get around this if I have Vista? Thanks.

1. I assume you want people to install the JRE before running the Java command.

2. When I run the Java command in step 8 I get "java.net.BindException: Address already in use: JVM_Bind" Is that what's suppose to happen? You don't say what should happen.

3. I have step 9 working before I proceed. What do I proceed to do? Is there a step 10?
DRGDC   | 68.239.100.xxx | 2007-11-18 01:55:12
I took my computer offline (unplugged my router). Next I had to uninstall Zune (2.0) and the MSXML 6.0 Parser. Rebooted. Then I manually installed the MSXML 6.0 Parser from my Zune 1.1 CD (PackagesZUNEmsxml6-x86-ENU(Zune).exe). Finally I ran ZuneSetup.exe from my Zune 1.1 CD.

I suppose that the 2.0 software updates the MSXML parser or they are otherwise tied together. Before I uninstalled the parser ZuneSetup.exe was failing. I ran the PackagesZUNEZune-x86-ENU.exe and it first gave me the MSXML error. Then after I fixed the MSXML problem (uninstalled and rebooted, installed from the 1.1 CD) it balked over not being run from ZuneSetup.exe.

I have figured out #2 for my previous post #17. I turned off my computer's web server so port 80 was available for the http server to run. I'm guessing after typing "java -jar ZuneFirm.jar" one is suppose to see "httpServer running on port 80"

Back to the question then what? My Zune is displaying

connected
To start, update the Zune software on your PC at www.zune.net/setup
ok

what happened to the file compression that was in the previous software i loved it cause my music files are over 35gigs but with the compression i was able to get all my music on the zune and then some.

how do i get the old software back on Vista?
Dis-satisfied customer   | 67.67.162.xxx | 2007-11-23 02:34:57
It is poor customer service and forced "upgrades" like this that destroy
hours of work and do nothing but frustrate customers that will ensure the
continued success of the IPOD over the Zune. Thanks microsoft for turning my
Zune from an enjoyable entertainment device to an irritating mismatched mess.
Please be sure to drag your ass as long as possible in putting out some sort
of solution to fix the problem to ensure I receive the same service I have
grown accustomed to over the years. I do so enjoy spending hours of what
little free time I have surfing tech sites trying lengthy, complicated, hacker solutions
that don't work anyway. Good Job guys.

yeah i wish there was a setting to change, i called zune and they pretty much had no idea what i was talking about and their customer service basically just reads the website to you. if anyone has a solution to this, without downgrading, it would be greatly apreciated.

I found this tutorial to be easy to understand and a godsend to get me away from the new firmware however I have one problem. The Zune.RE.zip file is unavailable for download when I click the link, is there any way someone could give me a direct link to the download.

This guide is terrible. For the firmware there's 3 files that come compressed in a .rar file. Which of those files am i supposed to rename? and when i type in "cd /temp" I am told that the system cannot find the path specified, even though i created the "temp" folder in c:

I'm not surprised that absolutely no one else seems to have gotten it to work. So thanks for giving us hope and then making us even more disappointed.

I think I'll just call Zune's support line and b1tch at them. Hell, I think EVERYONE who is reading this should call 1-877-GET-ZUNE, ask them how to downgrade the firmware and b1tch at them when they say you can't. Let them know that you absolutely hate the new software. Flood their office with calls about how much the new software sucks! We all loved our Zunes and we didn't pay $250 for the utter sh1t they've put us through with this update![smiley=angry

I believed that I followed the steps carefully, I was able to start
zunefirm.jar on port80 and I got 127.0.0.1 when I ping go.microsoft.com.
But when I connected ZUNE to my PC, Zune software doesn't start automatically.
I have to start it and it didn't say Upgrade Time to 1.5 or something. I have
to manually check for update and the update comes back with 2.1, not 1.5.
I thought the update is at 2.3 now. How does it come back with 2.1? where does
it connect to check? any ideas

THESE INSTRUCTIONS WORK! Make sure you execute the java download and install the runtime version...very important and not in the steps above. I had to physically erase the zune device with the 'reset' then during the reset screen you have to press the following buttons together...'back + center + left outer. This wipes the back to factory default make sure you have your data file located and backed up in a sarf place. I called Zune support because it would not let me replace the firmware. They LIE and tell you it cant be done! LIES! LIES! The zune automatically looks to the internet for the firmware, thats why you have to get the DNS pointing back to the local machine for go.microsoft.com Follow these directions and you can restore to 1.x. DNS loopback is the key and jave has to be listening on HTTP 80. Check out the screen shots of the java command in the character link by sracer.

It does not do anything after step 9. I reinstalled my software from the CD and followed all instructions. After entering "java -jar ZuneFirm.jar," it says "httpServer running on port 80" and does nothing.

What exactly do you need to do after step 9? Stop calling others noobs and be helpful please.

Zomg! It worked! I successfully downgraded my zune to 1.5! There is a portion of the instructions which are cut off at the end and here they are:

Next, turn your Zune on and reset it by pressing back+up for a few seconds. When the Zune logo appears, press back+left+center for a few seconds to format the hard drive. After you format, it will ask you to connect to a computer. Connect it. Open the Zune software, and something like ?update time? and ?Zune 1.5 firmware? will appear. (If it doesn?t load automatically start ?Check for zune device update?)

Your Welcome!

My bad...I downgraded my Zune (30) to 1.4* Firmware
Zunepod   | 68.55.37.xxx | 2008-04-19 19:30:25
OK, I have done everything correctly.
After step 9, I connect my Zune and I get the update page.
It does say firmware 1.5 and starts uploading.

Then it says no updates available! This is where I am stuck. Why does it not load the firmware 1.5? What am I doing or not doing that would cause this?

Any info would be great...
