dockpackToday we're looking at the Zune v2 Dock Pack and seeing how it performs.  More after the clicktastic goodness...

BrandZune
Item Description:  Zune v2 Dock Pack
Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price:  $49.99
Manufacturer's Description:  "The Zune Dock is an elegant home base for charging and syncing your Zune with your computer or for connecting to your home audio system.  (Requires extra cables - sold seperately.)"

dock packOur Take:  If you want to take full advantage of Zune's wireless sync capabilities, the dock pack is for you*.  And if you want to  have high-quality video output from the Zune device, the Zune Dock Pack is defintiely for you**!   Compatible with all Zune models (the port on the dock slides to adjust to the various size of Zune), the Zune Dock is made of sturdy, flat-finished metal.  The bottom of the dock is made of anti-slip rubber to keep your docked Zune in place.  It can dock with your computer or you can plug it into the wall - allowing for auto-sync to occur wirelessly*. (with correct settings.)  Take off the back panel for access to the audio/video outputs including component video which gives you high-quality video output to your TV**.

*Wireles sync requires a wireless network.

**high-quality video works only with Zune 80.  TV must accept component video for high-quality video.  Zune 4/8 do not support video out.

The only downsides I see with this device is it's more of a luxury than a necessity - especially if you have the Zune 4/8 or Zune 30.  There are tons of cheaper, more-practical charger packs for travel or wireless sync, and video-out works perfectly well on the Zune 30 with a video chord you would need to buy anyway.

dock1 Overview

Pros:
- Stylish, sturdy design
- Perfect for wireless sync
- Capable for high-quality video out
- Plugs into computer and wall

Cons:
- Will not have video out with Zune 4/8
- No high-quality video with Zune 30
- Video out cables not included

Rating:  6 out of 10

Do buy if:  If you must have high-quality video out with your Zune 80, or must have stylish wireless sync.
Don't buy if:  Do not have a wireless network, or do not have a Zune 80

Online buying suggestions:  Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, Frys.com, GameStop.com, Sears.com, Target.com.

so everyone can use it but only the 80 can get the high quality video?! [smiley=angry]

The fact that it won't have video out for the 4 and 8 and that the 30 won't have HQ video shouldn't be a con for the dock. Those are Zune hardware issues. The 4 and 8 cannot have video out, and the 30 cannot have HQ video.

^^^ Hardware issues from the Zune. That's just the way Microsoft made it.

el, the reason those are cons is why would you buy this dock if those issues exist with the Zunes? Would an owner of a Zune 4/8 or Zune 30 get the some functionality with this dock as a Zune 80 owner? - That is why it's a con for this device.[/color]

That cons not from the dock ace -_- it's from the zune.

Ace is right. Zune 4, 8, and 30 owners wouldn't get the same use out of the dock. Def a con.

y=think]u know how ipod has a high-capacity hard drive, where you can move song from one computer to another, does the zune have that feature also? and i have a zune already, but i am contradicting if i should exchange it for an ipod. i dont know if an ipod or zune it better (in terms of being more reliable). Michael, look at it as a reason not to buy this dock, when you could buy the old school v1 for cheaper if you own a zune30/4/8.

Thanks ACE, I was wondering how the 80 gets it's 480i out.

you mentioned that there were other docks available. Can you lead me in that direction?

The v1 dock had a built-in amp.
What about the v2?

Will this auto sync with all of my podcast subscriptions? Without having to boot up the computer?
