WM 7 Will Have Zune, Touch Interface, and Has Features Not On iPhone

January 7, 2008 by ACE

The guys over at InsideMicrosoft have gotten their hands on some confidential internal-use-only documents that detail tons of information about the up-coming Windows Mobile 7 complete with images!! Check out what we can expect:

  • Windows Mobile 7 will … emphasize the use of touch on the device, as well as motion gestures created by using the device. It is, absolutely, Microsoft’s effort to beat back the iPhone, and the iPhone is referenced several times in the document.

  • Windows Mobile 7 will use touch gestures, similar to how the iPhone does. You will be able to flick through lists, pan, swipe sideway, draw on the screen. A lot of emphasis has been put on making navigation easier and doing away with scrollbars, including a new scroll handle that allows for multiple ways of finding items extremely fast.

  • Windows Mobile 7 will use motion gestures, something the iPhone does not. It will not use an intricate and complicated series of gyroscopes and accelerometers. Instead, it will use the camera on the phone to detect motions and create appropriate actions. You will be able to shake, twist and otherwise manipulate the phone and get things done. The phone will be able to perform actions when placed face down on a surface, and it will know when it is in your pocket or bag. The web browser will incorporate gestures for back and forward actions. Here’s an image:

  • Gestures shown include in music or a slideshow, shaking the phone left or right to go to the previous or next song or photo, and shaking the phone in order to shuffle it. Here’s an image, which may only be a mockup, or it is showing us what Windows Media Player will look like on Windows Mobile 7, as well as the picture viewer

  • Windows Mobile 7 will have an exciting locking screen, that will allow you to play around with it, draw on it, shake it and completely otherwise mess with it. Here’s an example of a gesture, shaking the phone to wake it up:

  • Windows Mobile 7 will have dramatically improved visuals, different from the iPhone and much more similar to the dark and futuristic visuals of Windows Vista. It will feature graphical transitions, subtle effects, and other things to make it more interesting to look at. This is not detailed in the document, but featured in the multitude of screenshots. An example of the screen showing a transition from the device being asleep to awake:

  • Windows Mobile 7 is designed to use the finger, not the stylus, though many devices will be required to include a stylus. It is designed to be easy to use with the hand, including one-handed, and to be fun to use and easy to understand. It is designed to be used on devices with no buttons, few buttons, lots of buttons, full keyboards, and devices without touch screens.

  • Windows Mobile 7 is clearly designed for better media playback, with screenshots indicating a much-improved Media Player and photo gallery application. There is talk in the document of a games mode. Mobile Internet Explorer runs full-screen web pages in a minimalistic interface, and has “tabbed” browsing, except you can switch tabs by shaking the phone. A filmstrip view is shown, with the music filmstrip clearly showing a Zune icon with the option to purchase the song:

Worst thing about this whole deal is Windows Mobile 7 will not ship until 2009, according to the document. Looks like we’re gonna have to wait…

That is my biggest problem with Apple fanboys. If you own anything besides an Apple product they feel bad for you even if it's by choice. When I got my Zune people asked me if I couldn't afford the iPod. I responded by telling them that I had already owned one crappy iPod and I wasn't going to make that mistake again. Everyone that i've talked to with a Zune and even a Zen have been so much happier with them than their iPods.

the batteries wont drain like a phone normally would with cam on for a simple reason: its not recording anything!

in this case, its just going by motions to the depth of field, not recording, storing, focusing, etc. and thats whats the big drainer. the sensor would be a minimalistic function

OK Now I REALLY want this. If the main point of it wasn't being a phone(since I have no friends to call) I'd buy this.

Once again, MS > Apple. Tis a shame their software however is turning into **** (ZS and Vista = Memory Whores).

But other than that.. Oh ho ho people need to start looking at Microsoft and not Apple. They'd be saving money if they did.

I love Vista. I started using it on my laptop with Beta 2 and have been running it ever since. I like it so much more than XP.

It amazes me how awesome Microsoft can be when they use their heads and don't try to get their hands on all of our money...

Zune - Kickass
WM 7 - Most Likely Kickass

Let's hope they stay this way.

Nokia made the NGage, and that flopped.

It's so hard getting into the gaming industry these days.. So many companies are trying and failing..

It's not even funny.

It's hard unless you have a good game and market it well. I have never heard of the n-gage until I just googled for it. The iPhone is everywhere. Microsoft should start running ads for Windows Mobile as well.

The pictures seem to have been removed.

But this does seem like an interesting concept...I would love a phone that could actually shut my apple fanboy friends up.

What is wrong with the current Windows Mobile devices? The features are far better than the iPhone and even though it's missing a bit of the eye candy it's really a great OS. I've had a few die hard Apple friends who bought the iPod and ended up replacing it with a Windows Mobile device because they were tired of always running a crippled phone.

They even already have a few Windows Mobile devices for people like you who don't like touch screens. My friend had a T-mobile SDA and loved it.

The WM 7 looks awesome.
So is this like the Samsung Blackjack, basically a windows computer on your phone?
By the way, I always had a feeling that Microsoft was gonna include Zune in some kind of phone. To make a phone primarily based on Zune, and called a ZunePhone, wouldn't have been a good idea anyway.

I might buy it just to support MS and also to say **** you Apple.

Nice work and views by all.
VISTA BEING AWESOME!?! What are you thinking Jasonsplace. It's the second worst sw that MS has ever released. It gives ME a run for it's money in just all around break and piss you off. There's something wrong w/ you jason. I can obviously tell also that you don't know very much about computers. Because no self-respecting Computer Savy person would ever say "I love vista".
I'm waiting for Blackwidow. Which is to be released in 09. Right after XP won't be supported any more. Or I might just go to only linux machines. That's right MS has really ****ed up this time.

Just using vista makes me feel as though I should use a iMac.
